Adapted diet for babies with a cow’s protein allergy will be partially reimbursed from next month. This is reported by Minister of Health Frank Vandenbroucke (Vooruit). To be entitled to a reimbursement, a doctor must first make a diagnosis. It is not about milk based on, for example, soy.

« Good food is important for every child. More pain because adapted food is too expensive, that is a prosperous country like ours. That is why we now pay back all adapted food for every child with a proven digestive problem based on test. »
Every year around 4,800 children are born with a cow’s protein allergy. It is one of the most common food allergies in babies younger than 3 years. To be clear: it is something other than lactose intolerance. In most cases, the condition is temporary in nature. But to get through in the first years without difficult symptoms, the right cow -free -free food is crucial.
According to the minister, 70 percent of babies can easily be treated with a thorough protein hydrolysate. If this food was not sufficient – which is the case with about 30 percent of the infants – there are also amino acid preparations. They are already partially reimbursed.
Because the majority of patients have already been helped with a thorough protein hydrolysate, half of this will also be repaid for half. The maximum price becomes 12 euros, a price that more corresponds to most standard infant food.
A doctor must prove the diagnosis to be entitled to the reimbursement. This doctor must also regularly follow the baby to see if adapted food is still needed. Milking based on an alternative protein source, such as rice, soy or goat milk, do not count as an adapted diet.
