Reform is on winnings in local elections VK, winnings seats with six votes difference
The first results of the local election round in the United Kingdom indicate profit for the right-wing populist anti-migration party Reform UK. British media report this on Friday. On Thursday, voting was made in the English part of the country in elections for regional boards, mayors and one parliamentary seat.
Reform has taken over the only seat available in these elections in the British House of Lower House from the Labor Party, with a difference of only six votes. Labor had applied for a recovery in the Runcorn and Helsby constituency, after the first count with four votes difference was in favor of Reform. The district vote for the lower house seat, because the Member of Parliament resigned this spring on behalf of the district after he was convicted.
Reform UK has won a mayor election in the Greater Lincolnshire region. Andrea Jenkyns is the first to win a mayor election on behalf of the party. In the National Elections of 2024, Jenkyns lost its lower house seat on behalf of the conservative party, after which she made the switch to Reform.
Two -party system under pressure
« I think we have replaced the conservatives as the most important opposition party, » says Nigel Farage in response to the provisional results. According to Farage, his party in the districts where they have not won has become the most important challenger. He also, according to him, « took a big bite » from the areas that vote traditional Labor.
It is the best election result for the young party Reform UK, which has been operating under the current name since 2021. « Reform is a major challenge for the traditional dominance of conservatives and Labor in British politics, » writes political scientist John Curtice on the BBC website. According to him, the losses of both the conservatives and Labor point to a shift in what is usually a two -party system. « Nobody seems to dominate British politics anymore, » said Curtice.
There was a voting in a few dozen regions on Thursday. Six mayors are elected, including some regional civic masters. And so there is a voting for one seat in the lower house. Reform UK is led by Nigel Farage, the former leader of the UK Independence Party, who was a large driver of Brexit.
