Record year 2024: Police issued hundreds of thousands of criminal tickets
The number of charges in road traffic liable to pay rose by 8.4 percent in 2024. A total of 434,799 such notices were issued – 383,692 of them, i.e. 88.25 percent, automatically by speed camera systems. The police are currently operating 27 permanently installed radar devices, two mobile lightning trailers, five mobile units, five track radars and two traffic light flashers.
Hidden investigators against burglars and robbers
« 90 percent of all fine notices are in the range of 49 euros, » explains Thierry Fehr, central director of Police Administrative, when the police were presented in 2024. « These are minor violations without points that are defined in the Code de la Route – such as slight speed overruns. » In fact, 96 percent of all automated warnings are eliminated to this 49 euro area. It means exceeding less than 15 km/h in town, less than 20 km/h outside and less than 25 km/h on the highway.
37 percent more drug dossiers: « Basically, people run after »
The situation is different if police officers issue warnings themselves. « Only 25 percent of the warnings pronounced by civil servants are in the 49-euro area, » said Fehr. « When a policeman intervenes, it is usually about serious violations. » Over 30 percent of these cases cost 145 euros – including deduction of points. This includes, for example, the run over red traffic lights, calls at the wheel or very excessive speed. In 20,404 cases, the police initiated criminal proceedings and sent a « procès verb » to the public prosecutor.
1,759 driver’s licenses moved in
The willingness to pay is high for warnings by police officers: around 93 percent of those affected pay the fine. In the case of automated radar measurements, the quota is 85 percent – in international comparison, according to Fehr, still « remarkably high », regardless of the nationality or residence of those affected.

If you don’t pay, you have to expect a so -called « amend forfaitaire » – the fine doubles. In the event of unpaid violations in the 145-euro area or in the event of offenses with a point deduction, the police switch on the judiciary. That happened around 12,000 times in 2024.
Police are preparing on: drones, bodycams and local police officers
In the reporting year, 1,759 driver’s licenses were drafted directly on site – with 3.46 percent a slight decline compared to 2023. In around 80 percent of the cases, alcohol was involved. « Anyone who drives more than 1.2 per thousand in Luxembourg immediately loses their driver’s license, » says Fehr. Another 14.3 percent of the entries took place due to particularly high speeds.
Prevention instead of trap
Of the approximately 30,000 traffic controls carried out in 2024, 18,000 took place within the framework of targeted prevention campaigns – an increase of 28.6 percent compared to the previous year. « These campaigns serve to raise awareness, » emphasized Fehr. « You will be announced to draw attention to dangers – not to lure people into a trap. »
“Klenscherschten” become a landlap
The topics are based on seasonal risks: visibility in winter, distraction by cell phones, alcohol at the wheel, motorcycles, school starts, tires or lighting. On April 9, Luxembourg also took part in the Europe -wide Speedmarathon, a cross -border campaign against Raser.
A third more alcohol offices for large checks
On behalf of the public prosecutor, the police carried out a total of 159 large -scale alcohol controls in 2024 – an increase of 5.3 percent. 18,322 drivers were checked, 13.8 percent more than in the previous year. 649 of them were above the permissible per thousand value of 0.5. This is an increase of 28.8 percent. In 265 cases, a fee -based warning was pronounced – for values between 0.5 and 0.8 per thousand. Criminal proceedings were initiated in 384 cases.
