Reconstruction to clarify clarity about the collision of 14-year-old Gerben (Sint-Laureins)

Part of the area around the church in Sint-Margriete was closed to all traffic on Thursday evening because a reconstruction is underway. Speurders of the police and the East Flanders public prosecutor came to the scene to get more clarity about an incident, so the 14-year-old Gerben L. was in a coma for a few days. The teenager from Sint-Laureins ended up in the hospital after he was knocked over last Thursday, around 11.20 pm by the 27-year-old JB from Eeklo. There was also a 19-year-old passenger from Maldegem in the car. According to the first statements, a discussion would have arisen about the sale of Vapes. The precise course of the facts is not yet entirely clear. They hope to create clarity with a reconstruction. The end of the reconstruction is expected around midnight.

Director JB is known in Eeklo and the surrounding area for his illegal vape trade. That evening he had an appointment with a friend and the sister of victim Gerben to sell some vapes. A fight arose, but what it further derailed is not entirely clear. The deal got out of hand.

JD is said to have boarded his car to follow Gerben’s sister and friend. Gerben himself was waiting a little further. Eventually a witness stated that she saw a girl calling. « My brother was hit, » she said.

The boy had broken eye sockets, a torn lower lip, various fractures in his lower jaw, a bruised right lung and two fractions on his right leg. After being in a coma for three days, his dad confirmed on Monday that he is awake.

During a reconstruction, all steps are re -executed and investigators check whether the statements of those involved and of witnesses can be true with reality. That should bring more clarity in the course of the evening.

The driver and his passenger, a 19-year-old boy from Maldegem, are currently in jail. The council chamber decided Tuesday to extend their arrest by at least a month. The driver is suspected of attempted manslaughter, the passenger for guilty absenteeism.
