Reconstruction of the Town Hall Square: The eyes turn to the pavement

A new coating is emerging

Readers of the portal kauno. Diena.lt shared their observations that the outline of the new pavement has already been seen in the Town Hall Square.

« Granite flat palettes have been added in all corners of the square, and the cafes are already laid.

Aloyzas Pakalniškis, Head of the City Management Division, confirmed to the portal kauno. Diena.lt that the renovation of underground communications is being completed in this representative space of Kaunas.

« On the outskirts, adjacent to cafes, the granite coating has been laid, so first the new coating will be laid in this place. While the work is underway, pedestrians use the contractor’s temporary aisles and drivers passes.

When the new granite coating is laid, the entire square of the square will be of the same height, with no cities, making it convenient to move for pedestrians and people moving in a wheelchair. After the reconstruction, the priority in this part of the Old Town will be given to pedestrians, and there will be no chance of crossing the Town Hall Square in transit.

The work has already been done

Recently, Kaunas City Municipality has announced that the reconstruction of the Town Hall Square has started from archaeological research. Last year, 4,000 were investigated. sq.m. meters of area. It was one of the biggest archaeological works of its kind ever in the Old Town of Kaunas. Then the underground communication repairs were moved.

« Changing old, long -term non -touching centralized water supply, sewage and gas networks will undoubtedly benefit from the locals and businesses in the neighborhood. Underground will significantly reduce the likelihood of possible accidents and unplanned expenses, » said Pakalniškis.

It is stated that three trees in poor condition will be removed from the Town Hall Square in the near future. In the autumn, they will be replaced by nine 6-8 m high mature July and maples. Greens will be created around the trees during the reconstruction. Both the rest of the old and the new greenery will ensure the shade on sunny days.

All work is done according to plan. We hope to complete the whole reconstruction by the end of the year.

Unrecognizable space

The arranged Town Hall Square will add not only to the reconstructed Vilnius Street, but also to the fundamentally restored Town Hall, which has been renovated by both the facade and the interior. They have an interactive exhibition of Kaunas Museum, exhibition space, café, and newly revived the big hall for marriages and official city ceremonies.

It is also planned to modernize the fountain here. The old composition of the fountain is already disassembled, and in its place it will come from the floor of the pavement.

As usual, the central area of the square will be adapted to celebrations, concerts and other events. The pavilions and markets will be able to settle here.
