Reconstruction of murder of Christiane (68) creates more clarity: « My client is now starting to realize what happened » (Wetteren)
On Thursday a reconstruction of the murder of 68-year-old Christiane van der Haegen was held in the Warandelaan in Wetteren. She was murdered at her home on October 9, 2024. « I cannot respond to the file, but there have been some things clearer, » says Dirk De Maerschalck, the suspect's lawyer.
Christiane van der Haegen (68) From De Warandelaan in Wetteren was found dead to her garden on Wednesday 9 October. She was cut with a knife after she might have caught a burglar. The following day, the police were caught in Kalken, near Laarne. He had excluded the occupant of a home there. When the police arrived on the spot, the burglar was bathed.
The police could make the link between the burglary of Kalken and the murder of Christiane in Wetteren by a bicycle that is said to have been stolen in the Warandelaan, by the murderer, a man of Serbian descent.
Almost half a year after the facts, a reconstruction took place on Thursday at the place where the murder took place. Roland de Gand, the man of the murdered woman was also present according to Jef Vermassen, the lawyer of the victim's family. « The reconstruction went well, » says the counsel afterwards. « The suspect has answered all questions, making everything much clearer now. »
Psychiatric reports
According to the criminal lawyer, Christiane's relatives are satisfied that they now know how the facts have happened. “They absolutely wanted to know that. Her husband now wants his wife to be cremated, so that he has her back with him, but that will not be for immediately because the attorney must first give permission for that. ”
Dirk De Maerschalck, the suspect's lawyer, also says that the reconstruction has created more clarity. « My client cooperated well, » says the counsel. “It is now waiting for reports from the psychiatrists who have to decide whether or not my client is notable. The first months after the facts, he was not entirely aware of what happened. In the meantime, he is under medication and begins to come and the realization of what happened and shows regret. ”

De Maerschalck does not want to express himself at the moment about a possible referral from his client to the Court of Assisen. « Much will depend on the psychiatric reports and then we will see what they think about his situation then and now, » he concludes.
