Rather inconspicuous despite the best location: the « Maharaya » in the upper town

I have to confess in advance: Maybe I am biased at this restaurant because it is my favorite person. Not in Luxembourg, but rather in the entire large region. These are high tones, for which I hope I can’t get into devil kitchen.

So since I have always come to the Rue Louvigny with a fixed goal for several years, I am also not deterred by the external look: Because at first glance, the restaurant seems rather inconspicuous, often even looks closed. Accordingly, guests rarely sit on the tables in front of the window front, and light only burns in the front area at noon. Where an entire family used to use, only an older gentleman is now working – and it is rather reserved.

In order to prove to my colleague that these circumstances and the rather mediocre online reviews have no meaning in my opinion, I take them into the upper town. Sitting on the window front, we as a starter order the « vegetable Pakora » (6.75 euros), i.e. various vegetables that were fried in a dough made of lentil flour. A fruity chutney and a spicy bean-cucumber salad are served. Even if the starter is quite piquant, we are both enthusiastic. And the first hunger, which had come up by the gentle smell of caraway seeds, is breastfed.

For the main course, my vegan accompaniment orders the Dal Makhani (13 euros), a lens court. Actually, butter and milk are included – this is clearly marked on the map – but it is also not a problem to order the vegan court. As a result, of course, something is lost from the traditional taste, the texture is different or less creamy – the colleague is aware of it. Nevertheless, she is convinced, it is « definitely well seasoned – the most important thing about the Indian! ». And concludes: « Do you can do a knouteren ».

Let’s come to the actual star of the show: the « Chicken Mughali » (18.50 euros), for which I have been coming from for years. On the map described as chicken in coconut sauce, prepared according to Mughali-type. I don’t quite know exactly what that means. But one thing is clear: it is particularly creamy, perfectly seasoned, not too spicy and not too mild. For me, the name of the court is also a miracle pit: because in any of the Indian cookbooks I have, I have ever found a recipe for it. I would have loved to cook it, because for me the dish – especially on a bad day – feels like a hug.

Just like the « Garlic Naan », which we prefer not to order on a working day – also because it is with Ghee and not vegan – for which I can guarantee numerous other visits. Instead, we test next to the rice as a side dish Chapatti (3 euros), an Indian pan bread. Conclusion: a little dry, but fluffy.

So if you come from, you should definitely test my body dish. Ideally in the evening or on weekends if you can bring a little more time. Not only because the older gentleman sometimes needs a little longer, but also because you should enjoy the food here instead of consuming in a hurry.
