Raised Tsunami Alert to Tonga
The Pacific Tsunamis Alert Center raised Tsunami’s warning on Sunday that it had issued a 7.1 magnitude earthquake registered off Tonga, an island country of the Pacific.
« According to available data, the threat of tsunami caused by this earthquake is completed, » says the body’s alert portal. The Alert Center made the decision after waves were registered between 0.01 and 0.05 meters above sea level, while before it had warned for the arrival of waves up to one meter.
“Sea level fluctuations may occur in some coastal areas near the earthquake over the next few hours,” he underlines in his message.
The US Geological Service (USGS), which records seismic activity worldwide, indicated that the shaking occurred at 1:18 am on Monday, local time (12:18 Sunday in Lisbon), 10 kilometers below the sea bottom.
Tonga is a Polynesian country formed by 171 islands with a population of about 106,000 people, most of which live on the main island of Tongatapu. The archipelago is located over 3,500 kilometers from the east coast of Australia.
Tonga is located in the so -called Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the seismically most active areas of the planet, where variable intensity tremors occur daily.
