Raik: The turnout in this election will be 25-30 percent
According to the mayor of Narva, Katri Raik, even if the residents of Narva do not boycott the elections after the riigikoga’s decision to change the constitution, the appearance in these elections will probably be between 25 and 30 percent, writes BNS, referring to the material of Rus.Postimees.
“This is very depressing, since in this case only a third or even a quarter of the city’s inhabitants will represent the City Board. And Tallinn, that is, state power, is becoming more remote. The responsibility of local authorities is increasing, ”Raik said.
“The Russian -speaking Estonian is offended, sincerely offended. The country is divided into two camps: Estonians and we, Russian -speaking, which Estonians do not trust. I do not want to say this, but I must: integration, as we presented it, actually failed. Not only citizens of Russia are offended, although they, too, but also Estonian citizens, for whom their native or family language is Russian. Each of our citizens in Narva has in a family or among relatives Russian citizens or stateless people. Why is my mother -in -law not suitable for Estonia? Why is my father, who legally lived and worked in Estonia all his life, is not suitable for Estonia? Citizenship and nationality do not make a person a threat to security, ”she said.
She also advised the owners of gray passports as soon as possible to sign up for the Estonian language courses. “It is not difficult to achieve level B1,” she added.
On Wednesday, Riigikogu approved the bill on amendments to the Constitution, according to which foreign citizens of Russia and Belarus will lose the right to vote in local elections this year, but owners of gray passports will still be able to vote this fall.
About 26 thousand citizens of Estonia, about 18 thousand citizens of Russia, 68 citizens of Belarus and about 6,500 people with indefinite citizenship – owners of gray passports live in Narva. About 21 thousand people voted in previous elections to local authorities, the turnout amounted to 46.6 percent.
