Radboud University suspends cooperation at institutional level with two Israeli universities

Radboud University immediately spends the cooperation at institutional level with two Israeli universities. The Nijmegen institution announced this on Wednesday. It is about the Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The Executive Board said the collaboration earlier this month wanting to break. They continued that decision after a positive advice from the university participation council.

The Executive Board takes over the position of an advisory committee, which states that « human rights violations by Israel in the Palestinian territories are serious and systematic. » According to the advice, the Israeli universities in question « contribute to direct and specific violation of human rights » in a number of cases.

However, the suspension does not apply to collaborations between faculties and individual scientists from Radboud University and Israeli institutions. The participation council had advised the Executive Board to also suspend those collaborations.

Student protests

The decision of Radboud University follows one Persistent student protests At home and abroad. Students and staff demand that institutions break down the ties with Israeli universities because of the war crimes and human rights violations that Israel commits according to experts in Gaza. On Wednesday, another protest march took place in Nijmegen.

Earlier Tilburg University decided to break the institutional cooperation with two Israeli institutions. In contrast to Nijmegen now, Tilburg did not break the collaboration with Hebrew University, because according to Tilburg University, that institution plays a « critical voice » within Israel. The University of Amsterdam suspended an exchange program with Hebrew University. Utrecht University decided to collaborate with Israeli universities for the time being unstoppable.
