An appeal to dog owners in Suwałki. Walks only on a leash
At the same time, dog owners were appealed for special prudence. During walks, they should be carried out on a leash so that they avoid contact with fallen animals, which can be carriers of the virus. It was also reminded of the obligation to vaccinate dogs against rabies. Cats, however, should remain closed.
The veterinarian also ordered the city services to find all cases of dead mammals.
Rabies. How to proceed in the event of a bite
Rabies is an infectious viral disease that attacks the central nervous system. The virus incubation period can last from several days to even several months. The rabies virus is destroyed by high temperatures and sunlight, but at the same time has high resistance to low temperatures.
In the case of contact with a potentially infected animal, it is important to immediately and thoroughly wash the wound or skin, which had contact with the animal, using water and soap, and then consult a doctor.
The time from the moment of infection to the appearance of clinical symptoms of rabies is variable and depends on many factors, such as the amount of virus introduced into the body, its eating, the place of infection and the extent of the wound, as well as the species and age of the infected animal. In animals, the incubation period may last from several days to over 7 years, but most often it is:
– for small animals such as dogs, cats, sheep, goats or pigs – from a few to 90 days;
– For large animals, e.g. cattle or horses – from a few to 180 days.
