The Brussels police court ruled that Redfox, the youth movement of the PvdA, should not pay tens of thousands of euros fine for stickers distributed and stuck in the municipality of Etterbeek. « This was a clear attempt to muzzle Redfox as an organization, but we don't let ourselves be intimidated. »
At the beginning of last year, the municipality of Etterbeek made a lawsuit against RedfoxFor sticking stickers in the public space. The youth movement now says that the police court ruled that they could not be held responsible for sticking those stickers.
« That is no more than logical, » says Onno Vandewalle, National Vice -President of Redfox. “Our stickers are very popular among young people, everyone could have stuck those stickers. It would be absurd to fine a car manufacturer because drivers break the speed limit. If you condemn an organization because they distribute stickers, it in fact means that every youth movement, trade union or association that offers stickers can be destroyed financially for stickers that are 'incorrectly' applied. «
Freedom
This case is an important precedent for Redfox. “This was not just about fines, but about freedom of expression. If a youth organization can get more than 44,000 euros in a fine for distributing stickers, freedom of expression is endangered, « says Vandewalle. “Stickers are a way for young people to express themselves, to participate in the social debate and to form their identity. If the distribution of stickers becomes punishable, you prevent young people from expressing themselves politically and socially. » (AMG)
