If you see a political video passing on Tiktok, chances are that it will come from the PvdA. A report from the communication company Exposure shows that the party was good for no less than 85 percent of political interactions on Tiktok in the month of May. This concerns, for example, comments, shares or likes – not about reach, what the number of people see a message.

Six out of ten most successful politicians are on social media at the extremely left -wing party. The top five consists of Kim de Witte (PvdA), Tom van Grieken (Vlaams Belang), Paul Magnette (PS), Jos d’Haese (PvdA) and Georges-Louis Bouchez (MR). Moreover, more than sixty of the hundred most successful posts come from the extremes: the extreme left is particularly good on Tiktok, extreme right scores mainly on X.

Reinout van Zandycke, manager of exposure and expert political communication, quotes that the interactions on all platforms are in principle measured in the same way. But on platforms such as Tiktok are more active and more inclined to interact digitally, which ensures higher figures. Johan De Backer, communication director of the PvdA, indicates that the party consciously started early with Tiktok, because it lived with their supporters.

During the elections, the PvdA has already deployed Tiktok in a lot and the presence of the party on the medium becomes stronger every day. « Social media compensate for our limited presence in traditional media, » said Johan De Backer. How that success of the PvdA is achieved cannot be explained one -on -one for Van Zandycke. Take, for example, Kim de Witte: he is relatively unknown and has only 9,000 followers, but last month had by far the highest number of interactions. With his Video about the pensions On Tiktok he already has 2.8 million views, 191,000 likes and 6,400 comments. « I don’t think the average person knows Kim de Witte, but he scores better than Jos d’Haese, the Tiktok-Koning of the PvdA, » says Van Zandycke.

According to Van Zandycke, nobody really knows how the algorithm works. The success of PvdA does not come from advertisements, because Tiktok prohibits political advertisements. « The content and style of De Witte’s video is good, but I have already seen many good videos that have not gone viral. » Although according to Van Zandycke it is no coincidence that PvdA just scores so well on Tiktok. « Firstly, the classical political parties are much less active on the platform and they still think too much about Facebook. PvdA is very hard on Tiktok and she also works out her posts better. »

Pensions and Gaza

Also striking are the themes with which PvdA scores online. The party claims topics that connect with their target group, such as Gaza and Pensions. « We are working on themes that young people in particular are worried, » says Johan De Backer. It is no coincidence that Gaza and pensions dominate the feeds of our politicians. Of the hundred most successful posts, 28.6 percent were about Gaza and 27.1 percent about pensions. Asylum and migration scores much worse with 8.4 percent.
