Last day, the Russian president has unilaterally declared a « Easter truce » in Ukraine. This declaration of Putin is a non -serious and cynical act of a person who has maintained his maximalist goals for the destruction of Ukrainian sovereignty and culture two months after the full -scale invasion.

He leads the systemic brutality and barbarity of his forces, including the murders and torture of civilians and soldiers, robberies, abductions, castration and abuse of prisoners of war, attacks against civilian goals and an attempt to destroy Ukrainian culture.

And we are expected to believe that the same creature that has observed all this also wants an Easter truce?

Why did Putin do this and what does it mean for the war?

The truce is short – about a day, if Putin is believed (and should not). This is a truce that Putin requested unilaterally from the Kremlin’s comfort. As such, the truce is not binding to the Ukrainians in any way.

Putin did not because he shows a drop of empathy for the soldiers – on both sides – who fight in this war. He did it because he still believes that he has supremacy in the war and can dictate her pace.

But war is an interactive endeavor and just doesn’t work like that. Both sides have the ability to act. For anyone who does not believe this, please read Clausevitz or study the history of any war.

There are many practical challenges to reach a truce. Ukrainians and Russians are engaged in nearly 1000-kilometer front line. The Russians have recently increased the pace of attacks on the ground. These operations and the inertia they generate cannot just be ruled out as closing a crane. The Russians and Ukrainians are also engaged in continuous, developing impact campaigns over each other against each other. They also have a strategic impulse that cannot just be turned off overnight.

Another practical challenge is that it is not clear what the Russian truce is about. Whether it’s only for land battles, or also applies to air and maritime operations. Will intelligence and monitoring tasks still be performed? This kind of confusion means that the battles between Ukraine and Russia during the ceasefire are almost certain. And it seems that things are going right.

So this is the cessation of fire only according to Putin’s words. But this is also the entire design of the Russians. Putin will want to put Ukraine in a position in which he is considered a « terminal offender », although he was not a party to it. There are enough people around the world who are ready to believe such things, unfortunately.

Like many previous truce, this is another that Putin does not intend to observe. The Russian president has a long history of negotiations on agreements and termination of fire, which he does not intend to observe.

Putin only takes actions that he thinks will lead to some form of creation of an advantage. This declaration of one-sided Easter truce is no different. In the end, the « truce » is related to the fact that Putin gives the Trump administration a little sweetener in a very bitter situation.

Putin does not want the war to end. He personally invested too much in it and re -form his country in a « military nation ». Putin also does not want to give way to his maximalistic goals. But at that moment of the Putin war, it is important for Americans to remain engaged as long as possible and not to withdraw from their role.

There are several reasons for this. First, because the current American position is in favor of Russia. Negotiators like Steve Whitkoff repeat Russian narratives and appear to be focused on large -scale territorial discounts in favor of Russia. At the same time, there is almost no prospect of US security guarantees of Ukraine. This makes it easy for Putin to renew the conflict.

The second reason why Putin does not want the Trump administration to withdraw from peace talks to Ukraine is that Ukrainians and Europeans have to deal with Whitkof and others like him, which is wasting their time. This absorbs the time and attention of decisions key persons and distracts them from more important strategic initiatives (such as enhancing pressure on Russia).

The third, the last, the reason for the continuation of the US role in the negotiations is that they sow discord and chaos among the supporters and allies of Ukraine. This allows Putin to pursue a strategy for « destroying systems » that destroys relationships and confidence between security partners that Putin at the same time likes and can use.

Putin’s Easter truce is a message directly to Trump and the members of his administration. Putin’s message sounds approximately like this:

This is complete garbage, but some who want to distance the United States from their previous support policy of Ukraine will accept Putin’s story because it meets their position and politics.

After all, this truce is unlikely to be much important for the war trajectory, except that Putin seeks to re -engage the US administration in short -term negotiations. Given the lack of clarity about the details, its unilateral character and Putin’s history of breach of agreements, it will not continue a day (the truce is obviously already violated).

Putin is a cunning but evil actor. He will continue to use cunning like the one to pursue his cruel and unnecessary war against Ukraine and the Ukrainian people because he feels that he can still win it. We need to convince him in the West.
