Putin proposes direct conversations with Ukraine but does not mention 30 -day ceasefire / day
The leaders of Ukraine, France, Britain, Germany and Poland met in Kiev on Saturday, suggesting a 30 -day unconditional ceasefire from Monday and promised to impose new sanctions on Russia and increase military support for Ukraine if Moscow did not agree with the proposed ceasefire. They announced that the US supports this ceasefire proposal.
The leaders of the five countries also contacted a video conference with colleagues from about 20 more countries ready to support Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron stated that « if this ceasefire was violated, we have agreed that Europeans and Americans will prepare and coordinate mass sanctions » against Russia.
The US and Ukraine have been trying to make Russia agree with a similar proposal for a ceasefire for weeks, but unsuccessful.
« Today, we have come to absolute unity among the world’s countries, including the United States, that there must be a 30 -day unconditional ceasefire, » British Prime Minister Kyr Starmer said on Saturday.
« For the first time in a long time, we had the feeling that the whole free world was truly united, » added Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The President of the European Commission (EC), Urzula von der Leaya, also expressed his support for a ceasefire proposal, which she said, « to be implemented without prerequisites to pave the way for full -fledged peace talks. »
Macron said the ceasefire would mainly be supervised by the United States, but also « Europeans would contribute ». He pointed out that the ceasefire would open up « immediate work and talks with the parties involved to achieve stable and lasting peace ».
Putin did not mention Kijiva’s allies’ suggestion of ceasefire in his statement, which was published at night, but offered to hold new Russian and Ukrainian talks, stressing that they should be without prerequisites. The Russian dictator also said he wanted to « eliminate the main controls of the conflict and achieve lasting peace », and accused Ukrainian supporters in the West that they wanted to continue war with Russia.
Macron said Putin’s suggestion to organize direct talks with Ukraine was the first step, but that is not enough. « There are no conversations before an unconditional ceasefire, » Macron told reporters on the way home from Ukraine, adding that Putin « is looking for a way out, but he still wants to get time. »
US President Donald Trump said he would continue to work with both sides to end the war in Ukraine.
« Potentially a great day for Russia and Ukraine! » Trump said Trump on his platform, without specifying what he was talking about.
« Think of hundreds of thousands of lives that will be saved when this endless bloodshed, hopefully comes to an end ….
