Sebastian Wieser, founder and CEO of the digital platform for procurement processes, unite, about strategy work, the importance of processes and the dynamics of B2B and B2G.
As a CEO, strategy is not just a task for me, it is my responsibility and my drive, « says Sebastian Wieser, founder of Unite (formerly Mercateo), a digital platform for procurement processes. » But a strong strategy does not arise, but is constantly developing « , strategy development » is an integral part of my daily thinking and action « . Wieser, a doctorate in physicists, who started his career at McKinsey in IT strategy consulting, is one of the speakers at the Vienna strategy goal on April 22.
Three basic principles
Three basic principles include the strategy of Unite: First, transparency and customer orientation to make procurement processes easier, more comprehensible and fair. Second, sustainability is « not an addition, but an integral part of our business model ». Third, partnership and integration would create a digital infrastructure that connects buyers, suppliers and partners.

Unite pursues both business-to-business and a business-to-government strategy. The two segments B2B and B2G would differ primarily with regard to their requirements, processes and priorities. « The B2B area is about companies that want to set up their indirect purchase more efficiently and strategy, » says Wieser. « You are looking for solutions that can be integrated quickly, automate processes and help to reduce effort and costs noticeably. » In the B2G area « legal requirements are in the foreground. Legal processes, complete documentation and traceability are central requirements. At the same time, sustainability, regionality and social criteria are becoming more important. » But it is always about process efficiency and cost reduction.
« We regularly examine our strategic orientation – with a structured look at what is unite and what we want to measure. A central criterion is the satisfaction of our platform participants – i.e. customers and partner companies. We actively entice feedback, carry out surveys and evaluate how our solutions work in everyday life – whether you create added value, simplify processes and comply. Sustainability not only thinking, but actively implementing, really redeeming, ”says Wieser. One is based on internal goals as well as on external standards-for example in the Ecovadis gold certification or compliance with the principles of the UN Global Compact.
« Another important touchstone is market developments. We observe trends in business, politics and technology- in particular about sustainable procurement, digital platform solutions and regulatory changes in the B2B and public sector. Our goal: remain forward-looking and adjust early before the pressure comes from outside. »
If a company digitizes its purchase, a lot changes – both in the processes and in the organization. « Many steps – from the need report to the release release – can be automated. This saves time, reduces errors and relieves the teams. » The roles would also change with the changed processes, says Wieser.
What is often overlooked: When purchasing digital purchases, a lot of structured data, for example at prices, are incurred, Co2-At values, sources of supply or delays. « This data is valuable. They not only help with reporting, but also to plan better, recognize risks at an early stage or to develop supplier relationships in a targeted manner. The purchase becomes a real information hob in the company – and has long been more than just ordered, » says Wieser.
Digital means well positioned
The environment also changes continuously. The energy crisis in connection with the war in Ukraine clearly showed how dependent many companies on functioning supply chains are – also in Austria. « If you are well positioned here, you can react faster and counteract better. » Or in other words: « Digitization simplifies processes and strengthens the purchase and makes it more and more future-capable. » (MHK)
