PSD wins in Madeira, but without absolute majority

The PSD wins the legislative elections in Madeira, with 43.34% of the votes and 23 deputies, being to a deputy to obtain the absolute majority. The biggest surprise was JPP, with 21.05% and 11 deputies, surpassing the PS and becoming the second largest political force of the archipelago. The PS goes down to third place, with 8 deputies and 15.64% of votes.

In fourth was the arrival with 3 terms (5.47%), followed by CDS-PP and IL, who elected one deputy each. CDU and BE stay out of the Regional Parliament and PAN loses the place it had won in the previous elections.

CDs can guarantee absolute majority

In this scenario, the CDS can be the easiest solution for Miguel Albuquerque to get a majority (24 deputies) to govern. José Manuel Rodrigues, head of the CDS-M list, had already left the possibility of the social democrats.

Outside the equation is IL, which also elects 1 deputy, but had already excluded the possibility of enabling a PSD government with Miguel Albuquerque.

“Another extraordinary PSD victory”

Montenegro had already reacted to the provisional results in Madeira and stressed “another extraordinary PSD victory”.

« The Madeiran people once again proved their patience to solve at the polls what politicians were not capable, » said the prime minister, adding that this victory of Miguel Albuquerque in Madeira will ensure the necessary « stability » for the region.
