PSD, CDs and PPM hold agreement. Priority to go to the road

By the will of the PSD, the largest party of the coalition that makes up the government of Luís Montenegro, «It is everything as it is»as regards the composition of the Democratic Alliance (AD), with which PSD, CDs and PPM competed for the 2024 elections.

Although there have not yet been formal conversations between the three parties and the lists of deputies are still doing, in the direction of Luís Montenegro, the strategy is «Stir as little as possible» And that includes the deal with the two coalition parties.

Although the junction of PSD and CDS, not generating a robust victory in the elections of a year, the social democrats do not intend to change. Hugo Soares, PSD secretary general tells the Sunrise what « The relationship, both in government and in parliament it was blameless ». In the debate of the confidence motion that led to the fall of the executive, the articulation between the two benches was visible.

Paulo Nuncio, parliamentary leader of the CDS, used the prerogative that it is up to parliamentary groups to request the suspension of work for one hour in an attempt to obtain understandings that avoid the lead of a motion of trust. With this request, the CDS_Shumated the role of mediator, in a final attempt to obtain consensus with the socialists who led the party to abstain in the final vote.

As, in many circumstances over the past 11 months, the script had been previously articulated between Hugo Soares and Paulo Nuncio.

It is based on a relationship that is not new and has had several versions over these fifty years of democracy and that has almost always been well – except for the irrevocable of Paulo Portas in the Government of Passos Coelho – the PSD_conside that is worth betting on the maxim of the team that wins does not move.

CDs opt for silence

At a time when the two parties have not yet sat at the table to discuss the details of the agreement with which they will be presented to elections on May 18, the direction of the CDS prefers to stay silent about their expectations for the future.

The party that returned to the Assembly of the Republic thanks to the pre-election coalition that has signed before the last elections, is betting on doing nothing that can melind a relationship that is going well. Although centrists aim to come back to the future of elections in the future, it is aware that this is not the time to do so.

11 months of work in the government and parliament are not enough to consolidate a work image made, on top of that, with a prematurely interrupted legislature. This is why centrists bet on a reinforced victory in the next elections, which will give the party the time and space they need to mark differences not only in relation to the PSD, but also to the two right parties that have been consolidated in the political map, the liberal initiative and the arrival.

For now, the strategy is to try to create some dynamic in the regional elections of Madeira, next Sunday and in the local elections, where the party still has the presidency of some chambers. If you can keep the six municipalities that hold: candles (in the Azores), Santana (in Madeira), Lima Ponte, Cambra Valley, Oliveira do Hospital and Albergaria-a-Velha, the centrists consider that this is enough life proof to ensure that the party remains alive, autonomous and implementation in the country.

Another proof that the party bet to overcome is that of the regional elections of Madeira this Sunday. The CDS goes again to elections, but expects to maintain its representation, even if the polls indicate that it will pass from two to a deputy.

Priority is to go to the road

AD wants to go to the road as soon as possible, which is why it anticipates next Wednesday the decision on the lists of deputies that will lead to the next elections (see pages 4/5).

At the National Council of the 26th, the PSD approves not only the party candidates, but also the coalition agreement, where the places intended in the lists for the CDS deputies will be included.

To what we have learned, there have been meetings between elements of the two parties to last details, even why, the centrists will also have to approve the terms of the coalition. So far the CDS National Council is not marked to ratify the agreement, it is likely to take place on Wednesday, as happened in 2023, with PSD and CDs holding simultaneous meetings.
