Propaganda or praise of Russian culture and language training: What happens at school

Propaganda in favor of Russia or have nothing to do with the war in Ukraine praising Russian culture and simply studying Russian? The first or the other two have been happening in Bulgarian schools in the third year since Russia attacked Ukraine and declared Bulgaria as an enemy state?

The action of the school director Dian Stamatov, who is a municipal councilor in Sofia from GERB and former Deputy Minister of Education in the GERB cabinet, has provoked the issue some time again in the last month. On May 5, Stamatov – Director of 119. Acad. Mikhail Arnaudov High School in Sofia – announced via « Facebook »that the students from the 8th to the 10th grade at his school have visited a master class at the Russian Cultural and Information Center, through which they « introduced the traditional Russian crafts characteristic of the different regions of Russia, and made their own souvenirs with the technique characteristic of the village of Gzhel, Moscow region. » In response, history teacher Emil Jasim responded with the words that he was « shocked » by the initiative because Russia is a country that has declared Bulgaria an enemy.

« I completely do not understand what the argument that can defend a visit to the propaganda center of a country that is not just an aggressor against an independent state, but an enemy of all unions in which Bulgaria is a member, » Jasim wrote « is killing a civil population through one border and » uses normalization and « to the jurisdiction, is open.

In next publication Stamatov focuses on learning in Russian, which the students have chosen on their own, on the high level of preparation and « the feat of the teachers ».

Ukraine in the trap of Trump’s Eastern Policy

Asked by Dnevnik for comment, Stamatov stressed that « Russian language learning has nothing to do with any international relations », that « it is not a visit, but of the most ordinary going to a group of students » who were drawn to the Russian Center on clay vessels. Stamatov explained that the students were taken to the Russian center because « the only place where they can hear Russian speech is there. » « Who am I to stop it? » He asked.

Asked if the topic of war and accusations of Russia to Bulgaria were discussed, he denied. This did not happen either during the « drawing process » nor the teachers at the school went beyond the textbooks and the content. Children « cannot suffer because of the thought of the elderly, » Stamatov said. According to him, « We live in Peace Bulgaria, in which someone is trying to create another reality. »

The director and GERB municipal councilor also said that in 119 Sofia University « learned the most Ukrainians », in his words-« more than 10-15 ».

From Russian corners to Kremlin’s models

The public discussion also brought to the light of another practice, carried out in the years just before the war with Ukraine. The Russian Orthodox Church has donated Russian corners to 16 Bulgarian schools With the assistance of the Russian Cultural and Information Center in order to increase the interest of younger students in the study of Russian and all Bulgarian citizens in Russian culture, literature, music and art in general.

Minister: At the risk of disappointing Russophobes, I will not prohibit Russian

The Minister of Education Krasimir Valchev also took the attitude on the topic, taking occasion from the speech of the MP from « We continue the change » Lena Borislavova.

« The Government of Rosen Zhelyazkov and GERB, some of which I am, have always taken a clear position on Russian military aggression. However, at the risk of disappointing some hard -line Russophobes and those who play politically in Russophobia, I will not intend to prohibit the learning of Russian. Tchaikovsky  » – writes Valchev on Facebook.

« The education system, » he adds, « cannot educate hatred to a whole nation, culture or state. It must educate a conviction of human and authoritarian regimes, to aggressors, to the abuse of human rights, etc. But it does not educate hatred in principle. At least not in a democratic side.

Unfortunately, there are people who live to hate – and therefore they only understand education as a means of planting hatred.

Pathetic and sad. «

Russian

The Russian Cultural Center itself in Sofia is a structure of Rossobnature – the Russian Federal Government Agency under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which uses the instruments of culture, political ideology and foreign policy – the so -called soft force for Russia’s foreign policy results. Recently, Azerbaijan, and before that, Moldova closed these centers in their capitals. After the attack on Ukraine, Russian centers in Slovenia, Croatia, Romania were closed.

And MPs ask for Russian propaganda at school

Two MPs have asked the Minister of Education Krasimir Valchev, related to the possible Russian propaganda in schools. They are by Yavor Bozhankov and Ivaylo Mirchev from « We continue the change – Democratic Bulgaria ». Both are from May 7. The National Assembly published only the second, and the first is « in the process of processing ».

In connection with initiatives supported by Russian state and religious institutions and aimed at populating Russian culture and values among students Mirchev asks « What measures take the Ministry of Education and Science to identify and evaluate such initiatives in Bulgarian schools and what steps are taken to ensure that the learning process remains neutral and free from external political and ideological influences that could influence the formation of the value system of Bulgarian students. » The minister is expected to respond in writing on May 19.
