Professor KULeuven leads the top 50 in ‘What does Flanders earn?’, Children’s carers are at the bottom
In What does Flanders earn? Diving Axel Daeseleire, Camille Vanuxem and Professor Labor Economy Stijn Baert (UGent) in the pioneer of the Fleming, and attempt to draw up a ranking from the most paid to the least paid job. The goal is to arrive at a top 50, after the first episode they already have 25 salaries. That yielded some surprising results. Although it is important to keep in mind that the program zooms in on very private casesand that top 50 should be seen as a guideline earlier.
The provisional first place is for Veerle, Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at KU Leuven. She leads a team of fifteen scientists in their research into a medicine for Parkinson’s disease. To date, medication can only slow the effects temporarily. Veerle himself compares her function with that of the manager of a small SME. She is responsible for the wages of the scientists, but also for the content and results of the research. A kind of manager, so to speak.
Veerle, Professor at KU Leuven, is currently in the first place in the top 50 of ‘What does Flanders earn?’.
For that she gets monthly 11,299.74 euros gross. Almost exactly half, around 5,600 euros, ends up in her account. « You have to put everything in perspective. We have studied for a long time, there is a lot of responsibility for it, it is a job that has never been done … so I don’t think it’s a wage. »
Studying is best investment
The silver and bronze medals on the podium are for a secondary education teacher – in this case economics – and an aviation police inspector. They earn respectively 4,850.15 and 4,728.59 euros grosswhich is immediately a serious gap with the best earner of the episode. Several teachers were discussed in the episode. For example, Olivier, a physical education teacher, told him a gross wage of 3,991.59 euros gets paid.
“Research shows that every year that you study longer and will succeed in you later 7 percent more monthly wage”
Stijn Baert
Professor Labor Economics (UGent)
The difference is in the diplomas. Valerie, the Economy teacher, has a master and can teach in the third degree. Olivier has a bachelor. Or, as Stijn Baert says it in the episode: « Studying is just about the best investment you can make in your life. Research shows that every year you study and succeed for longer, you later bring 7 percent more monthly wage. » For the good order: both work full -time.

At the bottom, in 25th place, is the profession of childcare worker. Amber works at daycare center Het Vlinderhuisje and earns there 2,111.89 euros gross. Exactly the minimum wage, so. She sees 2,003.89 of them effectively appearing on her account. Saving one month will already work better than the other. “Even my friend thinks: ‘But you actually just play with those children all the time. » But I invite everyone who thinks so to come and stand here. There are physical disadvantages. You feel it on your back, headache also belongs occasionally, at the end of the evening you are broken. But the advantage is that you sleep well. «
Household help
The service sector regularly gets the news with it, so it is not surprising that household helpers are also in the lower regions of the list. Single Mama Olivia told me that she worked full -time, eight hours a day, and there 2,228.88 euros gross gets for. She is left with Netto 2,088.44 euros. There are some benefits, such as flexible hours she can spend on time with her daughter. But saving is not currently in it.
Read too. If necessary, they put down the work for those one euro extra: cleaning aids threaten with a strike
Still striking are the wages of Silke and Geert, a 25-year-old train driver and 41-year-old train supervisor at NMBS. She earns monthly 4,347.36 eurosgrosshey 4,314.70 euros. In this way they are among the ten best earners in the list for the time being. In this first episode, Professor Veerle was not included in the middle class: the majority of the professions was between 2,500 and 4,000 euros. Next week, among other things, a bus driver and a mayor will be reviewed.
