Principal at Stockholm School is convicted of a violation of the Constitution
In November 2023, a big fight arose between several students at a municipal school in Stockholm’s inner city. The safety representative issued a protection stop on the grounds that there was an acute risk of life and health. The principal did not agree with the assessment and decided that the teaching would continue as usual.
When a trade magazine reported on the brawl and the missing protection stop, the principal began to ask questions to the employees to find out who spoke with the magazine. The Stockholm District Court now convicts the headmaster against its denial for violation of the investigation ban in the Freedom of Expression Constitution. The penalty will be daily fines of almost SEK 60,000.
The headmaster has stated that his intention was not to investigate, but he asked questions about the article to find out what was behind the safety officer’s requirement on the stop. This is to prevent similar situations in the future.
However, the district court writes In his judgment that the principal’s choice of words during the meeting speaks very strongly that he intended to just investigate. The fact that the principal pointed out that this was not his intention is seen by the right as a sign that he understood how his statements would be perceived.
The trade magazine has talked to the teacher who sounded an alarm about the incident at the school and then had to answer questions from the principal. According to the magazine, the teacher felt forced to accept a bid for four monthly salaries to leave his job at school after the accusation became known.
– I’m so relieved, it’s so nice that he was convicted. It has been very difficult all the way and I do not understand how Stockholm City could let the principal work during the investigation and the police investigation, the teacher told the newspaper.
