Princess or firefighter? – Diepresse.com
The carnival is bursting with stereotypes. Boys are based on professions or superheroes. Girls want to be princesses. Why you shouldn't prevent this.
Every year again. This does not only apply to the carnival itself, which is popular in this country, at least in children. But also for the same costumes. They have had the same pattern for generations: girls want to wrap themselves in long dresses with a lot of tulle, glitter, sash and crowns – so be a princess (every now and then it can also be a fairy, ice princess or mermaid). Boys have the selection between costumes that are based on professions, such as the police officer, firefighter or FBI-Agent, or represent a superhero.
In between there are a few animals for small children – or parents who want to offer an alternative. The classics of ladybugs and bee are still popular and can be found in every carnival department. They only got company, in the form of lamas, alpacas, butterflies, tigers and in recent times a lot of unicorns. The very small ones, who still have little say, are put in avocado costumes. Frogs, dragons, strawberries or even bananas are now available as a costume for babies and toddlers. As soon as the children can have a say, it is usually stereotypical: as a princess, he as a firefighter.
