Pressure on Israel due to humanitarian blockage of gauze

Five months after the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution asking the world’s highest court authority for consulting opinion on the obligations of Israel to Palestinians in Gaza and the UN agencies operating in the occupied Palestinian territories, an oral case began in the Hague Court (ICJ) in the Hague. The main goal of Israel’s critics is to increase the pressure on Jewish authorities to release several weeks lasting complete blockage of humanitarian aid into a demolished Palestinian enclave.

Slovenia is one of 38 countries that will submit statements in the process. With Norway and 24 other countries, she was also among the applicants of the December resolution of the UN General Assembly, which asks the court to give non -binding opinion on what are the obligations of Israel as the occupation forces and Member States of the UN in relation to the presence and activities of the World Organization, other international organizations and third countries in the occupied Palestinian territory.

As Israel decided not to take the opportunity to participate in oral hearing at this point, the court devoted the most time to listening to the arguments of the UN and Palestine representatives, who tried to place court proceedings in a broader context of unbearable conditions in Gaza, where more than two million Palestinians live.

« No humanitarian aid or commercial goods have been allowed to go to Gaza on March 2. Elinor Hammarskjö LDthe UN Under Secretary General responsible for Legal Affairs, and insisted that Israel has a clear obligation to protect Palestinian civilians as well as UN staff, and that the occupied territory must be managed for the benefit of the local population, by facilitating the implementation of assistance programs, education and maintenance of health services, including those established.

Israel rejects cooperation with UNRWA

In the Palestinian territories, a total of thirteen UN entities operate, including the UN agency in 1949 to assist Palestinian refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA), which was accused of cooperating with the extreme Palestinian movement of Hamas after the seven ox attack and outbreak of war in Gaza. The Israeli Parliament passed two laws last October, on the basis of which the government of Benjamin Netanyahu completed cooperation with the agency, which made it difficult to make humanitarian efforts in Gaza and other occupied Palestinian territories.

In doing so, he recalled that by adopting the so -called temporary measures in recent years, the court has repeatedly ordered Israel to enable unlimited flow of humanitarian aid into gauze. « But Israel did not do it, » Hijazi stressed, convinced that in the background of the blockade, it is an attempt to « destroy the foundations of life in Palestine. »

Most of the participating countries will be set aside as the Palestinians side during the presentation of oral arguments and urge Israel to release humanitarian aid.

Israeli authorities indicated that they did not intend to discount this pressure. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has accused the UN and Secretary General of the Organization in response to the Hague trial in Hague Antónia Guterresto try to deprive the abuse of international law and international institutions by Israel for the right to self -defense and force the state to cooperate with the organization of the Unrwa, which the Israeli government persists that it is « infected with Hamas terrorists ». « That won’t happen, » Saar insisted.
