President of Ukraine in the Extraordinary Summit of EU leaders
The president of Ukraine will be present at the Extraordinary Meeting of the European Council on 6 March. The announcement was made this Thursday by the president of the institution, António Costa.
“I invited the president (Volodymyr) Zelensky to be present in Brussels on the occasion of the European Council to discuss the latest developments (in the war),” wrote António Costa in the letter addressed to representatives of each European Union (EU) country.
Extra EU's extraordinary summit will start at 12:30 pm local places (11:30 am in Lisbon) and there will be a « discussion with President Zelensky during lunch. » « Then we will focus on European defense, and in the discussion of Ukraine, » added the president of the European Council.
With regard to Ukraine, he writes in the letter, « there is a new momentum, which has to lead to understanding, just and lasting peace. » Therefore, the leaders of the 27 EU Member States need to understand “how they can further support Ukraine” and “principles that have to be respected from now on,” said António Costa.
EU leaders gathered on Wednesday morning by video conferencing to learn about the details of the meeting between the president of France and the US homologist on Monday.
The meeting was held on the third anniversary of the Ukraine invasion of Russia and was the main issue addressed.
Emmanuel Macron is the first EU leader to visit the US since Trump's inauguration, at a time when Washington and Moscow began preliminary negotiations for a ceasefire in Ukraine and a possible peace agreement at meetings that excluded the European Union and the country.
