President of the Republic not to vote on Sunday is to « put his head in the sand »

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, appealed to the vote in the legislatures on Sunday in a brief statement to the country, this Saturday, the day of reflection.

« Vote tomorrow for the future of Portugal, » said the head of state, underlining « with the world of today, more complex and unpredictable, not participating, not deciding, not vote makes it even less sense than in other elections. »

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also recalled that the 2025 world context is “radically different from the 2024 world, and once again highlighting Donald Trump’s“ return to power ”, underlining the changes that it brought“ in relations with Europe, Russia and China ”.

For Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, not to vote “would be to put his head in the sand, be indifferent to the severity of the lived moment, make absent”. And « as we know of our daily lives, the absent ends sooner or later to lose reason and limit themselves, as the people say, to cry on spilled milk, » he added.

Finally, the President of the Republic argued that « to vote at this time is to contribute to stability among an unstable world » and also took the opportunity to remember that « until May 2026 there can be no constitutionally new elections. »
