President of the Republic appoints Montenegro as Prime Minister
The President of the Republic has already indicated Luís Montenegro to be prime minister of the second government that will head. The outrage of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa comes after “the parliamentary viability of the new executive”.
“In view of the results of the elections for the Assembly of the Republic, hearing the political parties represented in the Constitutional terms, and the parliamentary viability of the new executive is ensured, the President indicated Luís Montenegro as Prime Minister of the XXV Constitutional Government,” reads a note published this Thursday on the Presidency’s website.
« The appointment and possession of the government will occur after the publication of the final results of the elections and the constitutive meeting of the new legislature of the Assembly of the Republic, » the same note adds.
The decision was made after hearing this Thursday afternoon, arrives, new opposition leader, PS, party that falls to the third political force in an unprecedented way and AD-PSD/CDS coalition that won the May 18 elections with reinforced votes but without absolute majority.
The results imply that it is necessary to make the respective government program viable for arrival and/or PS, guarantees given by both parties to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
After being received today alone by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, at the Palace of Belém, shortly after 6:20 pm, following the hearing to a delegation of his party, PSD President Luís Montenegro returned to Belém to be appointed.
Luís Montenegro returned alone to the Palace of Belém, where he had left at 18h00 accompanied by the remaining PSD delegation that was received at the hearing by the head of state for 40 minutes.
In the space of just over a year, the President of the Republic again calls Luís Montenegro to form government. However, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa only decided to give Montenegro power again after making sure that it arrives and PS would make the executive viable and give conditions of governability.
