Update Friedrich Merz is Gemania’s new Chancellor, at the second attempt. Merz obtained 325 votes « for », more than the 316 minimum necessary.
It was a premiere in the history of Germany. Never until now a designated chancellor has failed in the choices for the Bundestag after successful coalition negotiations. The leader of CDU, Friedrich Merz, failed to get the majority in the first round of the Chancellor. He received only 310 votes in a secret poll-with six less than necessary.
The fractions of the CDU/CSU and SPD coalition have 328 places in Parliament.
« Member of Parliament Friedrich Merz did not get the majority needed by at least 316 votes, » said the president of the Bundestag, Julia Klöckner. « According to article 63, the second paragraph of the Fundamental Law, he was not elected a federal chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. » According to Klöckner, 621 of the 630 members of the Parliament participated in the elections.
