As for his personal background, Prevost told the RAI Italian network before his election that he was growing up in a family of immigrants.

« I was born in the United States … But my grandparents were all immigrants, French, Spaniards … I grew up in a very Catholic family, and both of my parents were very much involved in parish, » he said.

Although Prevost was born in the US, the Vatican described him as the second Pope from America (Francis was from Argentina).

During his term in Peru, he was unable to escape the scandals of sexual abuse that have stigmatized the church, although his diocese strongly denied that he was involved in any attempt to cover up.
