Pope accepts apostolic nuncio renunciation in Portugal
Pope Leo XIV accepted the resignation of the apostolic nuncio in Portugal, Ivo Scapolo, announced the Vatican on Friday. “The Holy Father accepted the resignation to the position of Apostolic Nuncio in Portugal presented by Monsignor Ivo Scapolo, holding archbishop of Tagaste”, by age limit, says the Holy See Bulletin.
The Portuguese Episcopal Conference (CEP) has thanked Ivo Scapolo’s diplomatic work in the country since August 2019, “with the Church in Portugal and in diplomatic relations with the Portuguese State”.
“In addition to the normal exercise of its pastoral and diplomatic mission, we remember with particular relevance its follow -up when Pope Francis’ visit to Portugal on the occasion of the World Youth Day Lisboa 2023”, report the Portuguese bishops.
Ivo Scapolo was the dean of the diplomatic corps in Portugal, was born in Padua 71 years ago and entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in May 1984.
Throughout his career, he has held positions in Vatican representations in Angola, Portugal and the United States of America. Before being named Nuncio to Portugal, he had the same position in Bolivia, Rwanda and Chile.
The Vatican has not yet named his successor.
