Poll: The « Radiography » of Mortgage in Greece – 1 in 6 gives half its income to rent
The housing remains for Greek households. The government’s recent initiative to subsidize tenants with a rent year is a small breath but in no way « touches » the housing problem that requires comprehensive solutions such as increasing housing supply, restriction of speculation and simplifying subsidies procedures.
The « x -ray » of the housing in Greece is recorded by the opinion Poll poll on Action 24, capturing citizens’ view of the situation on the real estate market, government initiatives, and the impact on the daily life of households.
The government’s measures for tenants are not convinced – the issue of housing crisis remains high – the opinion of citizens
In the second part of the poll, participants are invited to answer a number of questions that cover much of the spectrum of this complex problem amid rentals.
The part of the income available for rent
The majority of respondents are talking about inadequate measures and evaluate the government’s initiatives for « my house 2 » and « RENOVATE-NIAL ». First of all, 76.6% say they reside in a privately owned home and 22.8% that they lease and pay rent.
Of those who lease 18.4%, they say that the rent paid is up to 20% of its income, 37.2% to 30%, 21.3% up to 40% and 16.9% to 50%.
What do citizens believe about government measures
The opinion Poll poll is trying to explore where the rent is due to rent. According to ELSTAT, in February, rent increased by 9.9 annually and on a monthly basis of 0.8%. Along with fixed monthly costs, housing costs becomes unbearable.
The question asked to answer the participants are stated in ascending order: Expansion of short -term lease spread (Airbnb) 44.1%, difficulty in loans and high interest rates for home acquisition 39.6%, lack of housing bids 26.6%, increasing costs of building 20%, single households.
The side effects of the housing problem
But what side effects of the housing problem? According to the answers of the respondents, the main side effects of the housing problem are financial pressure (29.3%), difficulties for new couples (27.5%), demographic (21.6%) and family residence expansion to older ages (15.5%).
As for government programs such as « My Home 2 » and « Refine – I rent », citizens say:
- 30.8% that they are positive steps but inadequate to solve the problem,
- 24.5% that they need more brave interventions such as social residence and rent allowance,
- 21.2% that they are positive but difficult to use,
A significant percentage also expresses skepticism about their effectiveness.
Each year there are more and more expensive rentals in Athens and Thessaloniki
Disapprove of renters for tenants
It is true that the Maximus Mansion, lately, is trying to turn the attention of public opinion away from issues that cause a negative image such as developments around Tempi and the ongoing revelations about the « truth group », throwing new benefits to the table.
The Alco poll (05/05) on behalf of Alpha is also trying to « measure » citizens’ opinion on the benefits announced. The answers of the respondents are heartbreaking for the government’s lineup as six out of ten responds to « no » to permanent support measures for tenants and retirees and only two in ten « too much or enough ». In a GPO poll (05/05) for « Parapolitika », 53.6% considers 53.6% of support measures for retirees and tenants, compared to 44.1% who consider them positive.
It should be noted that rates on rent in Athens and Thessaloniki are increasingly expensive every year. According to the official indicators of the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), increases compared to last year are double-digit when inflation losses have not been absorbed by wage-raid increases. Based on ELSTAT data available, the average monthly rent in Greece is around 440 euros (April 2025).
