Poll: Supporters of a prison lease agreement in Tartu among voters than opponents

According to the survey conducted by the Institute of Social Research, 48 percent of the respondents do not support, and 41 percent support the prison lease agreement, BNS, approved by the government.

On June 12, the government approved a prison lease agreement, according to which an agreement with Sweden on the delivery of up to 600 Swedish prisoners to Tartuskaya prison will be signed on June 18. In a recent survey of the Institute for Social Research, respondents were invited to express their opinion on this agreement.

The respondents were asked whether they support the government’s decision to sign on June 18 an agreement between Estonia and Sweden, as a result of which 600 Swedish prisoners with a long term of imprisonment would be taken to Tartuskiy prison. 48 percent of the respondents answered “no” or “rather no”, 41 percent – “rather yes” or “yes”, and 11 percent had no opinion.

Regarding party affiliation, 85 percent of the voters of the Conservative People’s Party of Estonia (EKRA), 71 percent of the Center Party and 49 percent of ISAMAA do not support the agreement. At the same time, 74 percent of the reform voters, 66 percent of the Party of the right and 53 percent of the Social Democratic Party (SDE) support the agreement.

The Norstat survey was conducted online on June 13 among Estonia citizens at the age of 18 and older, 985 respondents took part in it.
