With the beginning of the mushroom season in Estonia, cases of the search for people lost in the forest have become more frequent. The police calls to carefully prepare for hiking on nature and reminds how to act if you are lost. In recent weeks, the police conducted several large -scale search operations in different parts of Estonia to find people who got lost in the area.

The head of the Rakvere police department of Erkko Pirimyagi notes that the first mushrooms have already appeared from under the moss, which means that very soon a real revival will begin in the forests. “Unfortunately, this period of the year is always accompanied by situations when people who have gone to the forest or nature lose their landmarks and go astray,” he added.

For example, a message was recently received about the loss of an elderly man in Tartumaa County. “We started the search with the involvement of service dogs, the drone groups and our partners from the Kaiteselite. It was the latter, moving around the area on SUVs, that noticed a man in a helpless state. He was taken out of the forest and handed over to doctors, ”said the pyirimages.

A similar operation was carried out in Kharyumaa, where they were looking for a missing man of middle age. “In search, service dogs, colleagues from Rescue dDampers with drones and SUVs, as well as patrols with various equipment. Success came only a day later, after the aim was received about the possible direction in which the missing was moving. With a circle of terrain, the man managed to find a man. He was alive, but received hypothermia from an overnight stay in nature. Doctors examined him, and took him to the hospital for recovery, ”he added.

In recent weeks, there have been many other searches, and taking into account the approaching summer, it is worth recalling the basic rules of movement in the forest and in nature.

According to Pirimyagi, people, as a rule, do not plan to get lost in the forest. “However, you need to reckon with such an opportunity and think in advance how to act if you lose a landmark. First – This is to call help. Alarm center number 112 Available around the clock. The sooner we get a signal, the faster we can come to the rescue. In recent years, the awareness of people has really grown: they now go to the forest with a completely charged phone, put on their clothes of bright colors and are not embarrassed to cause help if they are lost. People understand: such a call can save life, ”he emphasized.

Most searches are completed for 2-3 hours, but there are more difficult cases when the searches of the mushroom pipe continue all night or even several days – with the involvement of additional resources: service dogs, helicopters, drones and volunteers.

In 2024, in the peak of the season of collecting forest gifts (July -October), the police received a little more than a hundred messages about people who were lost in the forest. In most cases, people were quickly – independently, with the help of telephone tips or on the siren of the patrol machine. Only a small part of the searches required additional resources: service dogs, drones, helicopter and an expanded search group.

Before going to the forest or to the terrain:

  • Always take with you a mobile phone with a completely charged battery – if necessary, you can quickly call help, and Rescuers – Determine your location.
  • Be sure to tell someone where and on What time You are going.
  • Be noticeable! Walking behind mushrooms or berries, take a white bucket with you – against the backdrop of nature, it is easiest to notice.
