Police officers stand up with name in crazy case: ‘We are lying to the citizens’
It was also DR who could reveal in January that eight officers claimed that this practice was actually very widespread. They said, among other things, that in some cases, one deliberately fails to investigate real criminal matters so that they end up never becoming anything and can be closed down instead and get the case bunkers down.
Since then, another 30 police officers – both earlier and current – have contacted the media with similar stories.
One of those who is now public is Martin Bjørnvig, is investigating at East Jutland Police, who describes how serious reviews are in some cases not investigated at the bottom, which he says undermines the legal security of citizens.
« We violate citizens’ legal certainty by failing to investigate reported cases. And we are lying to the citizens about the cause, » he tells DR, emphasizing that he personally goes to him.
Despite the serious charges, the National Police deny that there should be a systematic problem of « washing » cases.
« When I say that we have to prioritize really hard, it still has to happen within the framework of the law, » police director at the National Police, Lene Steen, told the media.
In response to the disclosures, the Ministry of Justice has initiated an investigation into the case processing in the police. The first step will be a review of violence and rape cases made by two regional state attorneys.
The results of this first part are expected before the summer holidays, after which a major coal excavation of cases of financial crime and human trafficking will take place. The study must, among other things, assess whether victims have been guided correctly, whether the decisions rest on a legal and evidential basis and whether the cases have been properly registered.
The extensive investigation should shed light on whether the police’s case management lives up to the legal security of citizens and the principles of justice.
