A banal traffic control in Vilvoorde did have very far -reaching consequences. A Dutchman who was caught calling behind the wheel, months after the check, the policeman continued to bother with death threats. The victim and his family even had to stay at a hiding address for a while. The man has now been sentenced to a prison sentence of 20 months.

The reason for the conflict was a traffic control on March 27, 2023 in Vilvoorde. The Dutch driver was then taken out of traffic by a patrol from the federal road police because he was already calling behind the wheel. He initially refused to identify himself. When his identity could eventually be outdated, he turned out to have a driving ban in the Netherlands.

Psychosis

The police then decided to raise the vehicle, which led to an eruption of the driver’s aggression. He became physically and verbally aggressive and eventually had to be fascinated. Although the man later apologized and reported his behavior to a temporary psychosis, the case did not stop there.

In the weeks and months after the incident, the man continued to threaten the inspector by telephone and e-mail. « The language in those reports was extremely threatening and even repulsive, » said the inspector’s lawyer, who took a civil party. « Photos were sent of weapons, bullets, and even images of my client’s home, to make it clear that he knew where the inspector and his family lived. My client had to stay at a hiding address for months. »

Compensation

The court imposed a 20 -month prison sentence on the Dutchman and sentenced him to pay compensation of 3,500 euros to the victim. The defendant did not show up during his trial and was sentenced in absentia. (CVH)
