Poland: second round of critical presidential elections

The juncture could not be more critical for the second round of presidential election This Sunday in Poland: an emerging military and economic superpower in the EU and the Eastern Wing of NATO.

Against the backdrop of war in the beautiful Ukraine and a divided West at a critical crossroads, its nearly 29 million voters go to the ballot box deeply divided.

Supported by the former ruling supranationalist law and justice (PIS) – and now, in the second round, and by the Polish far -right – he claims the succession of outgoing President Andrei Dundas, against Central Dundai, against Central Dimos.

Amateur boxer in his youth, who … practiced the sport and in hooligan clashes, « built » a career moving between the academic space and the political background at the time of PIS Politics.

Between 2017 and 2021 he was Director of the Museum of World War II in Gdansk – his birthplace – and was then appointed President of the Institute of National Memory.

A position from which he pioneered, in the middle of the war in Ukraine, in the removal of monuments of Poland’s communist past, entered Russia’s « blacklist » for this reason.

But in the pre -election period there was a donor around his name for another reason.

In addition to his public admiration for US President Donald Trump, there was a host of revelations of serious scandals about his past and present, raising questions of suitability for the presidency.

It seems, however, a little count in front of the high political stalemate of the ballot box, in a society as polarized as today Polish.

Life and state

Complaints about relationships with hooligans, mobsters, neo -Nazis and prostitution networks to corruption scandals make up a surreal profile for Poland’s right -wing presidential candidate.

In a first -round television debate, he acknowledged that he was involved in a hooligan clash in Gdansk. He later emerged that he was involved in episodes with a hooligan group connected to the underworld in 2009, while he worked as a historian at the National Memory Institute (IPN).

The incident has rekindled the reflection on Carol Navrotsky’s early relations with violent extremist circles and hit his election staff’s efforts to present him as a law -abiding conservative.

For the rest, he does not hide with his contacts even with neo -Nazis, but attributes them to his academic research.

« No one has ever heard me say a positive word about Nazism, » he says.

According to the Gazeta Wyborcza, however, the President Dunda’s office was intervened in order for Navrotsky to pass the Security check of the ABW spying service and to approve his appointment as the head of the State Institute of National Remembrance, which is investigating the Criminal Crimes.

In the spotlight, in the meantime, the Institute’s financial mismanagement scandals of the Institute at its Directorate and for the abuse of World War II, and he was a director.

It was also revealed that he bought a beer in the same period rather than an apartment in Gdansk from an 80 -year -old, in exchange for lifelong care in a state -owned nursing home.

But the most serious categories come from recent testimonies on the OneT website that Navrotsky was involved 20 years ago in a prostitution network, at a luxury hotel on the Polish coast in Baltic, where he worked as a guard.

He said he would sue the site.

He did not, however, appeal to a special electoral court, where decisions are immediately issued on false or defamatory claims against candidates.

Trump’s « right leader » for Poland

In its Polish version, the famous American Republican forum was a tiger for Navrotsky supporters, as well as executives of the Maga movement, forged methodical alliances in Europe, while President Trump does not hide his dislike for the EU.

In the event of Carol Navrotsky’s election in the Presidency of Poland, many in Warsaw and the EU will be in the air.

Inside the country it is certain that the center-left government coalition under Donald Tusk will spend difficult days.

Not having a wide parliamentary majority, he will find a captive of a conservative president who – as well as the outgoing – will use his veto to « bury » critical bills (from judicial reforms, to the decriminalization of the abortions), thus sinking more.

For Europe, it means that the plans of France and Germany to revive the so -called « Weimar Triangle » as quasi -EU guidelines will be weakened.

In a pre -election agreement to support the second round of the election by the right -wing presidential candidate, Slavomir Mentzen – who was broadcast via YouTube – Navrotsky pledged a complete opposition to Ukraine’s integration into NATO, the Polish Soldiers’ mission to Ukraine.
