Poland, presidential elections, a crucial test for Tusk’s pro-European government

Poland starts today the vote to elect the offspring of the president, Andrzej Duda.

Twelve candidates are in the race to follow President Duda, who cannot run again after serving two five-year terms.

The mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, heads in surveys. The 53-year-old is running for the liberal-conservative civic coalition led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Trzaskowski, who has been mayor since 2018, achieved a high score in the 2020 presidential election, losing close to Duda in the runoff.

Duda’s right-wing and justice (Pis) law party-which is the largest opposition party after losing power to the Tusk coalition in 2023-is supporting 42-year-old historian Karol Nawrocki, who is in the second place in surveys.

Sławomir Mentzen runs for the Radical Right -wing Party « Confederation », but there is little chance of winning.

An electoral runoff between the two strongest candidates is considered possible in two weeks.

President Duda represents Poland abroad. He has an impact on foreign policy, appoints the head of government and the cabinet, and is the Commander -in -Chief of the Polish Armed Forces in the event of a war. // he/ATSH
