Podcaster joke about Luxembourg’s « Language-Gaga »
The Luxembourg language always causes astonishment and jokes abroad. So recently in two episodes of the well -known German podcast « Mixed Hack ». However, the two podcaster not only put the language of the Grand Duchy on the grain.
« Mixed Hack » is a weekly German-language podcast by stand-up comedian Felix Lobrecht and moderator Tommi Schmitt. Since the start in September 2017, the podcast has developed into one of the most successful formats in German -speaking countries. All episodes are about personal anecdotes from the life of the two podcaster, but also about their opinion on socio -political topics, which are mostly packed amusingly.

The two episodes about Luxembourg are the episode 299 and 300. When asked which place from Felix Lobrecht, he replies that he is in Luxembourg. Then Tommi Schmitt says: « Oh Luxembourg, that’s one of the funniest languages there. » He also says: « Whenever you don’t know exactly what kind of language is it, it is either a luxeme … uh ‘Letzenburg » or Greek. » This passage can be heard at the end of episode 299.
Should school courses in Luxembourg only be in French?
In episode 300, which was released on May 6, 2025, the topic of Luxembourg will be taken up by the two podcasters again. Felix Lobrecht says that he is currently in a hotel in Esch/Alzette during the recording. To which Tommi Schmitt initially replies « wonderfully ». The background is that the Berlin-born Felix Lobrecht recently visited two appearances of his comedy program Luxembourg and is therefore in Esch/Alzette during the recordings.
The « Language Gaga »
Lobrecht also speaks of the Rockhal, the « Rockhalle without Le » in which he has already appeared in the past, and then asks Tommi Schmitt whether he has ever been to Luxembourg. Schmitt then lets his memories of half a day in the Grand Duchy pass – from « Boah is beautiful here » to « Weird because of the language, you never hear it somewhere » to « And it was ultra expensive everything ».
Lobrecht gets into this template and reports on his experiences with the Luxembourg « Language Gaga ». But first he quotes his brother, who describes Luxembourg as follows: « Luxembourg is as if someone was in Switzerland and it liked it and then he somehow recreated it from the memory. » In addition, you add German and French, plus as the last language « still something that nobody else can do » and something with taxes. The topic changes and it is about Schmitt’s interest in who will visit the show in Luxembourg. Lobrecht can even give concrete figures here. 77 percent of visitors came from Germany, only 22 percent from Luxembourg and one percent from other countries.
« Bonjour, thanks you good »
Another change of topics, the two now officially put the Luxembourg language on the grain. « It is really banana here because they sometimes speak German, everyone speak French, so my impression and English, but mix it together. » This is followed by an example in which Lobrecht ended up in three languages with a « Bonjour, Thanks you ». After that, the topic finally swings away from the Grand Duchy.

Language distribution in Luxembourg
There are no exact figures, who can speak which languages. However, according to a study published by Statec in 2019, 76 percent of Luxembourg citizens Luxembourgisch speak best, followed by French with 10 percent, German with 4 percent, Portuguese with 3 percent and also with 3 percent.
