Pigeons on the balcony? Experts warn you how to remove them in accordance with the law
The bird asylum is a center of protected bird rehabilitation operating at the Warsaw Zoological Garden. In connection with the ongoing breeding season of pigeons, the center’s experts drew attention to an important problem. When organizing balconies and gardens, Poles often come across bird nests, whose presence is not entirely on their hand. Not knowing what to do in this situation, they reach for various means.

As we read in a post published by the bird asylum on Sunday, May 11, it happens that the chicks are taken from the nesting sites and go to rehabilitation centers, in the worst case they are thrown out together with the nest to the trash. « It’s a very harmful and very terrifying phenomenon, » experts emphasize.
Even if young birds survive, « kidnapping » of them from the nest has serious consequences. « Young pigeons, at the time of prohibit, lose their chance to grow under the guidance of parents, learning to live in a group, learn to move safely in the city and avoid threats » – we read in the entry. And even the best carers will not be able to compensate for them.
So what can we do when pigeons decide to start a family on our balcony or just outside our window?
Experts resemble: the destruction of nests in which there are eggs or chicks is illegal
Experts from the bird asylum explain that if eggs or young have already appeared in the nest, it cannot be destroyed. « The nest with eggs and/or chicks is subject to legal protection and cannot be destroyed. Birds during breeding are protected, even city pigeons » – they emphasize.
What does this mean in practice? The owner of the property will be able to remove the nest only when young birds leave them for good.
However, if the nest we notice is empty (it is better to check it exactly before we take further steps) or only during construction, we can remove them. But beware, you have to act with your head.
Experts call for prudence and responsibility, they also sensitize not to act hastily. The place that the pigeons chose should be observed for some time and removed branches and other materials brought by birds on an ongoing basis. « The pigeons will finally get discouraged and fly somewhere where they will be welcome, » advises the bird asylum.
Let’s not forget that birds – even city pigeons – are part of nature, and we should protect this. Remember that the presence of these winged smaller brothers, although sometimes burdensome, is important for our ecosystem.
