Phone, investment, love: scammers use everything – the Union of Estonia banks launches a warning action
Today, the campaign of the Union of Banks to prevent fraud “has a lot of persons”, the purpose of which is to increase people’s awareness of various cyber and telephone schemes, and also recall that in any situation related to money, you need to maintain calm, carefully ponder and check the information, and not act in a burning room.
According to the head of the Union of Banks, Katrin Talihyarm, people who consume the most traditional media and are inactive on social networks are at risk. Therefore, the chances that they will receive the knowledge necessary for recognition of fraud below.
“We hope that our large -scale advertising campaign will remind you of dangers and will reach those who have not yet been aware of common fraudulent schemes,” Talihyarm said.
Contrary to common opinion, the victims of scammers are not only the elderly and native speakers of the Russian language. Among the victims are people with different income levels, education and age, and cases are recorded throughout Estonia. The profile of the scammers themselves has also changed significantly.
“Serious losses cause investment scams, fraudulent calls and letters on behalf of banks, police and state institutions. Schemes with fake premises, requests for donations and love scams are increasingly spreading. There are also scenarios as from films when people are asked to transfer cash to scammers personally or through packages, ”Talihyarm said.
From the beginning of the year to the end of April, the police recorded 437 cases of fraud, the amount of damage amounted to almost 3.4 million euros. A year earlier, over the same period, 335 cases were recorded with total damage to more than 2.2 million euros. Two years ago, during the same period, the police recorded 341 cases of fraud with a damage to about 2.1 million euros.
“This statistics reflect only cases registered by the police, but there is reason to believe that far from all incidents are informed to banks or the police. It is possible to prevent many cases thanks to the technical means of banks in combating the fraud and attentiveness of banking workers who convince customers to abandon suspicious operations, ”explained the head of the working group to combat the fraud of the Banks of Vaiko Kike.
According to the head of the criminal bureau of the Northern Prefecture Urmet Tambra, fraud today is one of the most massive and ruin types of crimes. “Whether it is a fake call, a phishing link or investment scam – behind all this is a global network, where each performer has its own role. Against the background of all this, you need to remember: in the center of any fraudulent scheme is an ordinary person who is trying to pick up all the money and savings as easier as possible, ”Tambra emphasized. “We cannot only hope that someone will block calls or translations for us-it is necessary to develop critical thinking ourselves in order to react in time. I am glad that the knowledge of people is growing, and they also contribute to a decrease in the number of fraud, ”he added.
“The visual materials of the campaign depict fraudsters in the form of monsters, because it is their essence: manipulative, insidious, intrusive and with bad intentions,” said the creative director of the campaign, Daniel Eric Raigeae. “We show scammers with masks in their hands, because they can try on any face or voice. Only attentiveness, vigilance and healthy skepticism help to recognize the deception, ”he added.
The “Fraudster has many persons” is financed not only by members of the Union of Banks, but also by telecommunication companies Telia, Elisa and Tele2.
The campaign takes place in two stages: the first – from May 26 to June 22, the second in the fall. During this time, people will be able to get information about financial fraud through television, radio, printed and social media, advertising brochures and the Internet.
