Peugeot E-3008 Dual Motor: The quiet power-or not?

Peugeot E-3008 Dual Motor: The quiet power-or not?

The 3008 and its big brother, the 5008, successfully started their electrical career: 25 percent of the total volume already eliminates the fully electric variants. And this proportion is likely to continue to increase, because the new Long Range models with 230 hp and a battery of 96.9 kWh are now also joining the previous version with 210 PS/73 kWh (526 km WLTP in the 3008, 500 km of 5008). They create respectable ranges of 668 kilometers (E-5008) or 701 kilometers (E-3008). The icing on the cake: Peugeot crowns the whole thing with a completely new variant-for the first time in general, a StLA medium platform (Opel Grandland, Citroën C5 Aircross, now DS N ° 8), two electric motors, each per axis, and thus as standard all-wheel drive.

The numbers

The key data of this version sound promising: two electric motors together deliver 325 hp and 509 Nm-enough for 0 to 100 km/h in six seconds in E-3008, around half a second more in the E-5008. Sounds like driving fun. However, these power models are not the most persistent. You only get the « small » battery, and the additional weight of the rear engine drops the range to 485–490 kilometers in the E-3008, 465–467 kilometers in the E-5008 (WLTP). Our tests show that these values are realistic in good weather. 450 kilometers are a good value on the highway at the speed of speed – often it will be less. With a maximum of 160 kW charging power, the jump from 20 to 80 percent takes around 30 minutes. In order, but not outstanding.

Two characters

Do the dual engine variants meet all rational criteria? Not quite. But what about emotions? After all, we speak of the strongest series models that Peugeot has ever built – only exceeded the ingenious 508 PSE. And here the judgment is clear: this double engine gives the two models an enormous dynamic. As usual with electric drives, acceleration is spontaneous and powerful-but here the thrust lasts longer, while many Stromer « exhale » early.

Thanks to all -wheel drive and precise distribution of strength, the road holding is impressive – even on a moist surface. Exactly the kind of character that you want from a Peugeot. But of course there is a « but »: With around 2,300 kg, these models are the hardest 3008/5008 ever – and that is a lot, especially for a Peugeot. This weight also ensures that the tires quickly become loud in curves – even at moderate speeds. And they come almost inevitably, because driving behavior builds up a lot of trust.

The cockpit presents itself modern, but also looks a bit rugged. Photo: manufacturer

The decisive factor is that the dual engine drive gives the two SUVs noticeably different characters. The 3008 looks sportier, the 5008 – with its fully usable seven seats – more like a sovereign power, symbol for status and security. Less traveling than the long range, but more emotional and more ambitious, these models underline the Peugeot’s premium claim-and could help to win more presence in the company parking spaces.
