Pets feed market: development forecast

The growing popularity of the content of dogs and cats stimulates the development of the feed market. Their consumption this year can reach 1.4 million tons, adding 5.1% a year to the year. More than half of the segment in monetary terms occupy super -premium feeds. High demand and reduction of competition with foreign products stimulates interest in the investors market, but the lack of imported raw materials restrains their activity.

The consumption of pets feed in Russia in 2025 will be 1.37–1.4 million tons, increasing the year by 2.6–5.1%by the year, is predicted to the consulting company Strategy Partners. Analysts expect the trend to remain. In 2028, it can reach 1.57 million tons, in 2034 – 2.13 million tons. Compared to 2024, growth, in the case of the implementation of the forecast, will be 18.8% and 59.6%, respectively.

According to Nielsen’s analytical company, natural sales of cat feed from March 2024 to February 2025 increased by 5.9% by the previous 12 months, for dogs – by 11.8%. Andrei Kucherov, Director of the Center for Competence in the agricultural sector “Rexoft Consulting”, says that in the first quarter of 2025, in Russia, 415 thousand tons of products were produced, which is more than 12% of the year by the year. Nestle and Mars refused comments. Miratorg explained to Kommersant, which is waiting for an increase in production and consumption of feed for pets in Russia.

Strategy Partners associate the development of the market both with an increase in the penetration of industrial feed, and with an increase in the population of pets.

Analysts expect that in 2025, consumers will contain 79.5 million animals at 3.3% more than a year earlier. Of these, 53.4 million are cats, 26.1 million – dogs. By 2034, the aggregate population of pets can increase by another 33%, suggest in Strategy Partners. According to the Center for the Study of Food and Blessing of Animals, from 2020 to 2023, the number of pets increased by 11%, to 74.8 million. The organization expects that in the future the growth of the population will continue.

The head of the APC and Consumer Sector Practice Strategy Partners, Roman Samoilov, notes that it is pushing a lonely residence in large cities to start pets of citizens. According to the last All -Russian census of the population, 41.8% of households consisted of one person in Russia. Since 2015, the value has increased by 11.2 percentage points. 85% of the owners of dogs and cats, according to the Center for the study of nutrition and well -being of animals, treat them as friends and family members.

In monetary terms, the turnover of the Russian market for pets in 2024, according to Strategy Partners, reached 564 billion rubles. Of these, only 129 billion rubles. We fell on economy class products.

The average annual category growth rate in 2018–2024 was 18%. For premium feed, the indicator reached 19.4%, their volume last year amounted to 197 billion rubles. The category of super -premium is estimated at 313 billion rubles, showing an average growth of 20.8%. In Miratorg, the demand for premium feed is associated with an increase in the well -being of animal owners.

The growth of consumption, according to Andrei Kucherov, increases the attractiveness of the production of feed for business: now there are the implementation of several large investment projects with a total capacity of more than 100 thousand tons per year. An additional factor is the fall in competition with foreign players. According to Strategy Partners, the share of imports in the Russian market in 2024 was only 4%. This is also dictated by the tightening of the rules for the import of products of popular Western stamps Farmina N&D, Pro Plan, Grandorf, analysts say.

Andrei Kucherov says that in natural terms the import of feed to Russia in 2024 amounted to just over 50 thousand tons against 105 thousand tons in 2022. In 2021, more than 150 thousand tons of products were also brought into the country, mainly from France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Germany and Canada. It is impossible to completely abandon imported feeds, since mainly specialized products are coming from abroad, said Vyacheslav Lashmankin, Executive Director of the Association of Pets Manufacturers for Pets.

A decrease in the share of imports, especially in the veterinary line, as Miratorg believes, creates opportunities for manufacturers. “But current market interest on loans calls into question the payback of such projects,” says Alexander Matveev, CEO of the de HEAS feed manufacturer.

Strategy Partners notes that a lack of raw materials, such as meat flour and some additives, can also restrain the growth of the feed market. In the medium term, local manufacturers will continue to depend on imported components and equipment, says Andrei Kucherov. He adds that Russian feeds also remain in demand in neighboring countries.
