Peter Wolodarski: Norway should be ashamed – flatter Trump instead of giving money to Ukraine
It is likely that everyone – except possibly Jimmie Åkesson – would be happy with an invitation to the Nobel party. It is an envelope that is nice to open, that gilds one day.
It is at least as likely that an invitation from the US president now fills most recipients with discomfort. If you are on Donald Trump’s radar, then the reason is that he wants something from you. He doesn’t just want to talk and be lovely. He expects delivery – and submission. And time and time again, Trump has proven to humiliate the « guests » who do not live up to his expectations.
Thus, it is best not to be on Trump’s radar, especially for government managers who represent small democracies. Just look at Denmark and Greenland. To have to do with Trump is like dealing with a gang leader – the less he thinks of you, the better. Let the focus be somewhere else.
When Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre Suddenly sitting in the oval room, as he did on Thursday, then it is important to be on guard. What does Trump want?
Our dear Norwegian neighbors certainly have high thoughts about their country’s importance in the world. But in the relationship with the United States, Norway, just like Sweden, is a Lilleputt.
In the relationship with the United States, Norway, just like Sweden, is a Lilleputt
And if Trump happens to have knowledge of Norway’s natural resources and strategic position in the Arctic, it is hardly an advantage. It is rather ominous. You do not want him to have heard of Svalbard and the oil.
What we know for sure that Trump knows about Norway is what he himself is constantly returning to – the Peace Prize.
The US president is obsessed with the award and thinks he has already earned himself. No American president has ever done so much for peace, science – yes, humanity! – Like Trump.
It is difficult to interpret his friendly Words a week about Norway – this « beautiful place » – as anything other than an unobtrusive Nobe application.
All this would be ridiculous, if not so much was at stake for the world right now, especially for Europe.
For Ukraine’s citizens, Trump’s whims are not « good TV », to quote the US president after the disastrous meeting in Ovala space with President Zelenskyj. It is a matter of survival.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre knows this. He also reasonably realizes that the visit to the White House is risky. The potential gains are small. The meeting can, in the worst case, fail. At best, it ends with the maintenance of the United States, without creating new problems.
Some heads of state and government have tried to deal with this dilemma by praising Trump when he was sitting next to it, according to the motto « flattery is free ». We remember how France’s Macron put his hand on « Donald » and the lie talked about his « friend ». We also remember Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who tried to Charm Trump with an official invitation from King Charles. And this despite the fact that the US president threatened to annex Canada, which formally has the British monarch as head of state.
It has been painful to witness How experienced democratic leaders tried to tickle Trump’s ego, while turning themselves into little boys.
However, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre went a step further a week. He did not content himself with sprinkling false flattery over Trump’s « peace initiative » – which in practice is a requirement for Ukraine to capitulate. When Putin’s war of attack came to talk, he was also dangerously closely drawn to the moral equation between attackers and victims.
« Both parties must know that they are going to deliver – and they must feel the press to do so, » Jonas Gahr Støre said in an obvious attempt to further set themselves up with the American values.
The statement from the Norwegian prime minister is astonishing. There may be peace tomorrow, if Russia ceases to attack Ukraine and respects the country’s borders.
Is it something similar to the prime minister thinks that the outside world should say whether the US or Russia claims Svalbard – that « both parties must feel pressure to deliver »?
Volodymyr Zelenskyj has « delivered » more than what Jonas Gahr Støre has ever been near.
If there is someone who should be pressed to deliver more to peace then it is Norway
Zelenskyj stands up for his people in an admirable way and tries with all power to penetrate the Russian attacker. He does not need pressure without support. The talk of « both parties » hides the fact that it is one of the parties that runs this war.
Jonas Gahr Støre said in the White House that Norway is a friend of Ukraine, and no one needs to doubt. But the truth is also that during the war Norway made huge profits on the sale of gas to Europe.
If there is someone who should be pressed Delivering more to peace is Norway.
The support is now on the way up, but from a huge low level. At the same time, the country has earned at least SEK 1,000 billion extra at the increased gas prices after the outbreak of war. Last year, Norway donated only SEK 17 billion to Ukraine, clearly under comparable countries.
In fact, Norway with its entire gigantic oil fund has the resources required for Europe to create our Marshall plan for Ukraine.
Jonas Gahr Støre was suffered in the White House by Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg, NATO’s former secretary general. Swedish Radio even reported that the « Trump whisker » was now in Washington.
They were given the impression that the gentlemen considered to have special insights on how to handle the US president.
In fact, we got to see two men who chose to confirm Trump and pretend that he is a great peace pigeon. In addition, in addition to Putin’s attack war, the duo really threatens Nordic security: US crazy ideas about annexing Greenland.
Ashamed, Norway.
