Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today that US President Donald Trump is unlikely to extend sanctions against Russia, introduced by the administration of former US President Joe Biden.

-It was difficult to expect another decision, especially as it is a pretty automatic action. We are probably at the beginning of our path to normalizing relationships, practically building them over. So we had no high expectations in this regard – Peskov said.

He estimated that contacts between the Russian side and US President Steve Vitkoff’s special envoy are useful because they allow the heads of the two countries to announce their views.

Peskov stressed that « the issues being discussed are very complex, so it would hardly be justified to expect some immediate results. » However, he added that « work continues ».

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Vitkoff last Friday in St. Petersburg, which is his third meeting with the US president’s special envoy. Peskov said that the meeting did not discuss the possibility of a direct meeting between Putin and Trump. « The topic of the meeting (Putin and Trump) was not discussed in detail, because each meeting must be well prepared, » Peskov said.
