The decision was made some time ago, although it is not exactly clear when. The police do not want to have said it is a relaxation. Candidates can still be refused at a later stage of the selection procedure after a morality investigation. According to the police, it is merely compliance with the law: it prescribes that someone must be of impeccable behavior to be able to work for the police. That does not necessarily mean a blank criminal record. The measure applies to police inspectors at both the federal and agents at the local police.

Nicholas Paelinck, chief of police of the West Coast police zone and chairman of the standing committee for the local police, illustrates the change with an example. For example, it could be someone who gave a loud party during his student days, in which a joint was also smoked. The student was convicted of noise, narcotic drugs and imports, because the cannabis came from the Netherlands. Refusing such profiles is unnecessary, it sounds.

The procedure has not been adjusted with a view to eliminating the staff shortage, although it can help: only 19 of the 98 Flemish police zones have enough agents.
