People on their way out of the country not saved weeks together

Birgir Jónasson, a prison chief, does not recognize that individuals who await expulsion from Iceland are stored for weeks in unacceptable circumstances in police prison. He says the system burst and that there is a lack of space.

He says he believes that for a while there are four individuals who cannot be saved by the Prison and Probation Administration. He does not recognize that dozens of individuals have been stored in this way at any given time, but it may well be that when gathering that their number can reach some dozen.

« On the basis of the Aliens Act, it is permissible to rule on detention, who do not have a residence permit and that is what is done.

The Act on enforcement of penalties is authorized to save detention prisoners in police prison, but no longer than four days, unless special circumstances exist. Now there are special circumstances that are that the prisons are just overcrowded, ”says Birgir.

He does not recognize that prisoners are stored in these circumstances for weeks, but claims to be familiar with some days, possibly up to one week.

« These are individuals in custody and when they are kept with the police, they are under the control of the police chief. I think he can answer this better, if he wants it.

In many ways, I can accept these concerns, but I cannot confirm the treatment of these prisoners in any other way. « 

Birgir says many synergistic factors cause this position to be up. Breakfast has changed. A large number of imports have occurred as foreign carriers come here with drugs and a large increase in this.

Then both more murder issues have come up and more murder attempts. Then he says that more serious offenses are coming to the fullest.

« The system is bursting and there is a lack of spaces that are not shaken out of the sleeve. It has been known for quite some time and I think we are missing about 20 spaces here and now it is difficult to say as there are so many variables in this. »
