Penguins and Antarctic Rainbow: 5 Photos of Ukrainian Polari won the Wikipedia Photo Contest

Immediately five Antarctic photos of Ukrainian polarists won the 2024 scientific image contest for Wikipedia. This is a record number of honors in the history of the project, Note at the National Antarctic Scientific Center.
In the category « People in Science » the first place took two pictures of the geophysics of the 29th UAE Alexander Bogomaz. They are filmed as the biologist of the same expedition Sergey Ermolenko takes away water samples from fresh lakes on the islands near Vernadsky.

The second place in the « general category » was a photo of the rainbow in Antarctica. It was made by the geophysicist of the 29th UAE Anna Soin. The scientist has been a unique phenomenon when drops of liquid water (to form a rainbow) and ice crystals (which form snow) were present in the air.
Two more photos received the fourth and fifth places in the Living Organisms category.
One of them was made by Alexander Bogomaz – in the photo the scientist recorded the moment of defecation of the subantarctic penguin (Genta).
« Ganuan of these penguins has a significant impact on the Antarctic land ecosystems: it can both promote the growth of local flora and suppress it », – scientists from Vernadsky explained.

Another work in the category « Living Organisms » belongs to the polar biologist Andriy Utvyvsky. He was staring in the Antarctic Marine Star of Labidiastra of the Ring -Rent at a depth of about 40 meters. It is an active predator that hunts all available beast invertebrates and even their relatives.

The International Competition for Scientific Images is held in Ukraine annually. Its purpose is to promote science and collect photos to illustrate Wikipedia articles. In 2024, 72 participants and participants were joined by 470 images.
The jury identified five main nominations: « Microscopy », « Living Organisms », « People in Science » and « Non -photographic images » and « general category ». Separately conducted a special nomination « Consequences of War ».
