Patients of the Narva Hospital could be infected with tuberculosis – the Council of Patients did not know about what happened

On Friday, March 14, it became known that as a result of the alleged negligence, several patients of the Narva hospital were at risk of tuberculosis infection.

During a random test, traces of the pathogen of the disease were found on the bronchopics. Three patients of the Narva Hospital, who were conducted by lung study, suspect infection with the pathogen of tuberculosis, since laboratory tests gave positive results on the studied equipment. Two patients undergo treatment in the Narva Hospital for other, previously identified diseases, and the third was directed for further treatment at the IDA-Viru Central Hospital, where the department of respiratory infectious diseases is located. Whether the actual disease will be detected – time will tell, since patients are under supervision.

The Narva newspaper contacted the head of the consulting council of the patients of the Narva Hospital Tatyana Stolfat. According to her, she learned about what had happened from journalists. “Undoubtedly this is a reason for concern and proceedings. At the moment, I need to get more information about the incident, ”said Stolfat.

There are serious suspicions

“At the moment, we know that traces of pathogens found during the control study of equipment were moved using a bronchoscope. It was also found that two devices for cleaning equipment operate at different temperatures, due to which cross-pollution is possible with pathogens. The service of cleaning devices was carried out in February 2025. I can assure that the hospital does everything possible for the well -being of patients, and we will leave them under the active observation of a pulmonologist for two years. This is the standard period during which the symptoms of the disease may appear. At the moment, the disease has not yet developed. The hospital began an official investigation of its work processes in order to identify the possible root causes of the incident, ”said Yullar Lanno, a member of the board of the Narva Hospital.

The incident is considered as a case associated with the safety of patients, since in the process of providing medical services, patients were harmful, causing physical or psychological damage. The case is registered in the data on patient safety database, which is conducted to organize patient safety, prevent and analyze such incidents, study the situation, assessment of preventive measures, developing health policy, as well as for statistics and research.

Tuberculosis is a bacterial infectious disease that most often affects the larynx or lungs. However, infection with a bacterium of tuberculosis leads to the development of the disease in only 5-10% of cases, which means that most infected symptoms of tuberculosis may not manifest. Most people who have contacted infectious patients with tuberculosis and infected do not become an active form of tuberculosis. The greatest risk of getting an active form of tuberculosis is observed within two years after infection.
