Patient safety threatened with the plans
The Medical Association of Iceland (LÍ) protests the extension of authorizations for prescription. The company considers the changes to threaten patient safety and require a meeting with the Welfare Committee.
The IMA has repeatedly criticized a bill for amendments to the Medicines Act and now declares a strong opposition to the fact that other than doctors will be authorized to prescribe drugs. In its earlier stages, the IMA has commented, both in writing and in meetings with the Minister of Health.
At worst, ridiculous statement
In a new opinion from the UA to Parliament, MA says that the bill has been in progress for a long time.
« The previous draft of this bill was a clear signal that there seems to be a rich wish to increase the number of health professions that are authorized to prescribe drugs. Against this, the IMA is in full swing.
In earlier stages, the health authorities for these plans have stated that the extension of prescription law to more health professions than doctors is suited to relieve doctors. LÍ considers this claim to be sad and in the worst case laughing. The prescription of medicines requires extensive knowledge of pathology, clinical assessment, clinical experience, knowledge of medical history and patient history, ”says the comment.
Drug prescription calls for appropriate education
« LÍ wants to emphasize and emphasize that doctors have never complained about stress for work on prescriptions. Doctors have no interest in the fact that they are light -hearted work related to prescriptions, as drug treatment is not only about prescribing drugs.
It also involves following chemotherapy, by monitoring the disease that is directed to the chemotherapy, review it, stop it, if necessary. Medicines for medication calls for education that few, if some, health professions have other than doctors, ”says the company.
Comments on various provisions
LÍ also comments on various provisions of the bill. This includes opposition to healthcare professionals responsible for the effectiveness and use of medicines that do not have a marketing authorization. The company proposes that this responsibility be abolished and instead emphasize the obligation to disclosure and that the definition of the term drug prescription be changed.
The comment also points out the importance of doctors and other healthcare professionals having clear and guaranteed access to the pharmaceutical database and that this will be specifically stated in the law.
The IMA also criticizes that no comparable conditions for conflicts of interest and ownership of pharmaceutical companies for pharmacists and apply to other health professions that may prescribe drugs. If pharmacists are granted permission for prescriptions, the company considers it necessary to impose the same restrictions.
Request a further conversation with the government
The Medical Association of Iceland reiterates that responsibility for chemotherapy should continue to lie with doctors and emphasizes that patient safety is always a priority for legislation. The company wishes to come to a meeting of the Parliamentary Welfare Committee to discuss the matter further and make its views known.
