With its 5,107 questions filed, Samsung exceeds the requests submitted by all Italian companies. The patent applications from Italian companies and inventors in 2024 decreased by 4.5%

Coesia, Ferrari and Iveco Group confirms the Italian companies that present multiple European patent applications, with 167, 136 and 55 questions respectively in 2024. In the top 5 Leonardo also enters the same with Pirelli (both with 49 questions) in 4th place. Brembo follow (with 39 questions) and I asked for pharmaceuticals with 33 questions. Among the first 15 there are also: Manitou, Sacmi, Scm Group, De ‘Longhi, Ima, Piaggio and Danieli. But also research centers such as the Italian Institute Foundation of Technology and the Polytechnic of Milan.

Falling questions

Patent applications to the European Patent Office (European Patent Office – EPO) from Italian companies and inventors in 2024 decreased by 4.5% compared to the previous yeargoing down to 4,853, according to the statistics of the license of the Index 2024. On a total level, EPO received 199,264 patent questions (-0.1% compared to 2023), a figure that remains stable after three years of strong growth. The United States confirms the first country for patent questions to the APO, followed by Germany, Japan, China and the Republic of Korea.

Samsung (alone) exceeds Italy

In the general classification Samsung is the company that presents multiple patent questions in 2024, overcoming Huawei who has fallen to second place. On the third there is LG, followed by Qualcomm and RTX. With its 5,107 questions filed Samsung alone exceeds the requests submitted by Italian companies and also Huawei’s data is slightly less than that of Italy as a whole.

The record of Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna

In the ranking of the first 20 regions of the EU by number of patent applications submitted there are only: Lombardy, which retreats to 13th compared to the 11th of 2023 and the Emilia-Romagna stable in 17th place. Veneto instead leaves the ranking. Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Veneto are confirmed in the top of Italy and represent over 60% of all the patent applications presented by Italian companies and inventors to the APO. Lombardy is confirmed in first place in Italy with 1,468 questions but with a drop of -9.7%compared to 2023 Tuscany exceeds Lazio and earns 5th place with 316 questions. Among the 10 Italian regions by number of patent applications, those that show the highest growth in 2024 are Liguria (+36.4%), Piedmont (+15.6%), Tuscany (+14.5%) and Trentino-Alto Adige (+9.3%).

The most innovative sectors

For Lombardy, the peak sectors are transport, polymers and other special machines. For Emilia-Romagna, handling, transport and electric machinery, equipment, energy. In Veneto the peak technological sectors are other special machines, consumer goods and civil engineering.
