Parket explains large-scale promotion in Peterbos-Wijk: “First phase in plan to secure the neighborhood, it is time for this to stop” (Brussels)

With no fewer than 900 agents, police and public prosecutor invaded on Wednesday in 271 apartments in the difficult Anderlecht district of Peterbos, known because there is a gang of ties with the drug mafia of Marseille.

According to Jurgen De Landsheer, chief of police of the Zuid police zone, these were apartments that are temporarily empty due to renovation works. A lot of people were hiding here. « The apartments are used as a transmission in the context of human and drug trafficking. Materials are sometimes hidden and those involved use them as a shelter. »

According to De Landsheer, two people ended people were arrested. In addition, 19 suspects were arrested administratively.

« We also did 4 judicial arrests and caught 4 people on Zwartwerk. In total we checked 411 people and 117 vehicles. We found many people who should not be there. In the future we will strengthen our presence in the neighborhood, also with social services. Peterbos must be liveable for the people who live there. Finally there was an weapon and a small amount of drugs. »

The Attorney of the King Julien Moinil also gave text and explanation with the plan behind the promotion. « For a number of years there have been a number of places in Brussels where drugs are traded. Those neighborhoods are suffering from that drug sale. I talked yesterday with a woman who lives in Peterbos, who told me that there are dealers active on the square where her children play, » says Moinil.

« The public prosecutor’s office has drawn up an action plan and the action of yesterday is framing there, to secure the neighborhood. The neighborhood must be completely back in the hands of the residents, not in the hands of drug dealers. This has been around for years, it is time that this stops. »

Rate plan

Moinil emphasizes that it was a security action. « Not for a judicial investigation with house searches to roll up a gang. This is a long -term work. We are talking about years, not about months. I have a 5 -year period. We can only make a Bilan if all the points I have submitted to the parliament have been carried out. »

The promotion was a first part of a plan with five phases. « I can’t explain our entire plan, but this was a start. All hotspots are in our attention. We are going for a global approach, » says the Attorney of the King.

« On one of the blocks on the wall there is a tariff plan of the drugs that are sold there. That is shocking. I took a picture of it. There was a murder earlier this year, in which one of the residents was found dead. We will not leave these hotspots in the hands of drug dealers. That is the reason that the actions will still happen in the future. »

Apologize

The mayor of Anderlecht Fabrice Cumps (PS) apologized to the residents of the neighborhood. « We want to apologize to the residents, they only want to live in peace there. We have limited the nuisance as much as possible, » he said. « Yesterday’s operation was secretly prepared. We were able to check all buildings. »

In addition, Cumps thanked the public prosecutor for the smooth collaboration. « Peterbos is a hotspot that is well known. The dealers are still active there. We do not abandon this neighborhood. Investments are being made in the renovation of the buildings. As a result, some towers are sometimes temporarily empty, so that they are cracked or used for illegal purposes. »

Eric Jacobs, director of the Federal Judicial Police Brussels, explained the possible link with a drug gang from Marseille. « That link is certainly confirmed. We found a number of suspects with a possible link, but there is also cooperation in the field of the organizational structure. » In the first week of July, according to Moinil, a delegation from the Marseille public prosecutor’s office to Brussels comes to sign a protocol cooperation. ”
